This is INSANE! The damn State is broke and this guy can make $100,000 in overtime!?! How do we STOP this?

STOCKTON, CA - A Stockton police sergeant earned nearly a quarter million dollars in 2009, placing fourth among city employees on a newly-released salary list.
Sgt. Jan Goodnight's base salary was actually less than $100,000, but after earning overtime of more than $100,000 , her total gross income was higher than $222,000.
"That's certainly a lot of money. I'm more surprised at the time she'd need to accumulate that. The amount of time she put in is pretty amazing," said Stockton police spokesman Pete Smith.
Smith said Goodnight's overtime compensation came from state grants for various traffic enforcement operations. He also said Goodnight took assignments that other police sergeants turned down.
"She gave up a lot of free time in days off to come back and work overtime," said Smith.
The salary list of city of Stockton employees included 434 people earning more than $100,000 in 2009. The structure of government salaries earned plenty of criticism among shoppers at Stockton's Lincoln Center.
"I think one of the big problems we have is salaries for government and city employees. They're so out of touch. We're paying for them when we can't make it ourselves. I don't like it at all," said Rick Braley.
"The average pay (for government employees) is 20 percent higher than the average pay for someone in the private sector. There's an issue there," said Roger Vermulm.

At least you can be relatively sure that cop is not taking bribes to let speeders or crooks off

She worked the hours, she deserves to be paid for them.

Isn't this remark kind of silly? I mean, there isn't even a privately owned police force that we can compare wages against...How is there "an issue"?

OT is time and half per hour.

Why do you doubt she worked the hours?

I was engaged to one for 2 years. I hung around with all of her fellow employees for even longer, along with other police from other municipalities. I know what they do. Although this is a very extreme case of it.

Not paid that much.
I thought it was the backbone of Capitalism to get compensated for work you do.

And I actually doubt she truely did work those hours.
Yay un-provable character assassination!

Is ALL your knowledge about EVERYTHING derived from the various women you've asked to marry you?

You have no idea how much she worked.

Someone works hard and gets paid for it - the good old American work ethic - and all you can do is dump on her for it?

The average government employee is more highly trained and skilled, doing a more difficult job, than the average private sector employee.

Holy crap, it's crazy that they make 100k as it is.

The cops around here get about $12 an hour.

OK, so basically you have an anecdote which in no way relates to the work ethic of this particular woman. Noted.

The city and county need tax collectors.

You use cops to collect your taxes?

We don't. We just get people to send us checks.

Wow, your town is run by idiots.

They do provide a service as arbitrators but personal safety they can never accomplish.

Uh-huh.

So would you support abolishing your local police force? If all they do is collect taxes and have no responsibility for personal safety, seems you'd support that.

Would you?

Yea but those checks just don't magically appear for no reason.

Did I ever say that?
You seem to be picking a fight.

Do they stay outside of your house and watch over you 24/7?
Your safety is your responsibility, when has that ever changed?

Even the supreme court has said that cops have no duty to protect you.

I'm asking a question, that's all.

Your safety is your responsibility, when has that ever changed?

So do they serve a purpose, or not?

Even the supreme court has said that cops have no duty to protect you.

Okay, hence my question - why have them?

It's actually a gal. The article notes that she took assignments other officers didn't want, and worked a lot of nights and weekends. Most officers view overtime pay as a second income, and work as many or as few hours as they need to get by.

What are they bitching about? Was the OT legitimate or not? If they didnt pay her they would have had to pay someone else, unless it was simply fraud.
Is it just not 'fair'?

Not paid that much. And I actually doubt she truely did work those hours.

Based on what knowledge do you doubt it? Mind you...if it was NOT legit then she should be arrested and charged, along with the supervisor that authorized the OT. If it WAS legit...you will eat your words...right?

Why not THAT much? It sounds like she got paid standard time and a half so she probably worked 60 hours a week.
