We are a Christian Nation....

Yet a lot of our left wing friends deny that including Obama........

Sorry...but it doesn't matter how many times you say it....you are DEAD WRONG.

This country was founded on the concept of religious freedom. If you cannot understand that, then you need to read the US Constitution.

We are not a Christian nation, never have been...and never will be.

We are a country that allows for Christianity, Judaism, Buddism, etc,.etc., etc.

The Christian zealots that feel the need to try to make this a "Christian Nation" are no different than the Pharisees.

Indeed. The American colonies were founded as Christian colonies, but the United States was founded as a secular government where people have the freedom to worship all faiths or even none.

Some had some pretty bizarre notions of religion too....

Wrong DD, Try again. You need to prove what your claiming, btw.

Have you read the Constitution? I suggest that you do.

This Country has NEVER been a "Christian Nation". As much as you religious zealots want to impose your perverted versions of Christianity on everyone...the fact remains. This country was founded on religious freedom.
The nation was founded on religious neutrality.
Christianity is but one religion that people are free to practice in this country.
Try as you might to force everyone to adhere to your beliefs...this country remains a religion neutral country.

Sam got it right but DD got it wrong yet sam still agreed with DD?

Are you all sure you know the definition of 'foundation'/'founded'?? A foundation is not the entire structure(100%). It's the support of a structure. 'Founded' is short for 'Foundation. Just think of the concrete foundation on your house. I never said America is a total Christian nation, and nothing more. I said that the foundation of this nation is Christianity. Which is fact. Anyone is free to worship whatever they choose in this country...but dont sit there and try and tell me that the founding fathers built the countries foundation on nothing! The Founding Fathers were Orthodox, which is very Christian.

foun·da·tion (foun-dshn)
n.
1. The act of founding, especially the establishment of an institution with provisions for future maintenance.
2. The basis on which a thing stands, is founded, or is supported. See Synonyms at base1.
3.
a. Funds for the perpetual support of an institution; an endowment.
b. An institution founded and supported by an endowment.
4. A foundation garment.
5. A cosmetic base.

You almost got it but not quite! I have faith in you, though.

Actually I found only one way to get them to leave me alone. When asked if I wanted a free Bible I responded, "Sure. But only if it has that Virgin Mother's number in it. She gave the best bj I ever had."

Awesome....

Saying this is like saying the foundation of the government of the United States is a monarchy since we were founded by colonists who were subjects to the British crown. And yet we are not a monarchical system are we?

No.

Similarly, while the colonies were founded on Christianity, for the most part each colony was dedicated to a different branch of Christianity, and some colonies were hostile towards other colonies for different religious beliefs. 100 years after the founding of these colonies, the Age of Reason occurred and the Founding Fathers looked to reason much more than religion. This is why most Founding Fathers were deists, which is just one step away from agnosticism. The Founding Fathers dismissed the supernatural nature of Christianity and instead looked to it for rational wisdom rather than religious dogma. It was from this understand of rationality and science that the Founding Fathers were able to come up with the ideals of freedom of religion for all Americans.

Despite popular belief, children probably will not become sex offenders because they saw a nipple on television. In fact, I would bet there would be no ill effects upon society at all if nipples could be seen during prime time outside of the Discovery Channel.

Heh. Dude, believe it or not, I'm hardly a prude.

However, there's the question of where do we want that line to be, in regards to public decency.

Public as in "out in public, in plain view of everyone".

I mean, is having sex on the sidewalk in a public park during daylight hours just fine with you? No? What about people walking down the sidewalk at 3:00 in the afternoon with their genitalia swinging in the breeze? I'd rather not be subjected to that myself.

Join a nudist retreat, I won't come there and bother you. Wear as little as you like in your house. If your back yard has a tall privacy fence, do yo' thing on the grass, whatever. Not my problem.

But in public, especially if we're talking about normal-hours plain-old broadcast TV, is it so freaking terrible to have a few simple standards? Do we HAVE to be constantly awash in sexuality ALL the time, as if that were the sum total of life?

Is it really so much to ask, to be able to sit and watch the Superbowl halftime with your child and not be subjected to Justin (bleh) Timberlake and Janet (blah) Jackson doing some kind of talent-less softcore porn musical? Complete with gold-studded nipple-popups? Hail it wasn't even good art.

Just pardon the hail out of me for thinking some mild basic standards might not be quite so horrible.

Contrary to what many of our left wing friends believe:

78% Think Jesus Christ Rose from the Dead

78% Think Jesus Christ Rose from the Dead - Rasmussen Reports

Today's the day Christians believe Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead, and 78% of Americans share that belief.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 10% don't believe Christ rose from the dead, and another 11% are not sure.

Wouldn't the Christianity of our nation be in the Constitution?

Don't feel bad. If you follow me for a block and half trying to give me a Bible after I said no thank you, I will say what I feel I need to.

I dont believe these idiots are following you for a block and a half to hand you a bible.....are they? That stuff doesn't happen where i live.

Furthermore, if only 49% of the United States believed Jesus rose from the dead, would we no longer be a Christian nation?

I had a couple Mormons on bikes follow me for a couple blocks. They weren't pushy and we were having a nice conversation. I didn't take any of their literature.

When I was in the navy, things like that actually did happen to me. People somehow felt it was important enough to tell us about god they would be dicks about it, which is not an effective way to go about it. While not religious, I believe in respect for others beliefs, and don't mess with people's religious beliefs, with the exception of those who aggressively push their belief on me.

No these people were that big of idiots. The church they were from is actually a good church and they do a lot of good. And normally when I say no thank you they don't follow or ask again. These two idiots on the other hand didn't follow the same rules, so I felt like I could say what I said. Normally I am not like that to those that after I say no thank you leave me alone.

Sorry....you are still wrong. It doesn't matter whether the vast majority of the "founding fathers" were "Christian" or not. The bottom line is that they smart enough to have the wisdom to make this a religious neutral country.

They did not make this a "Christian Nation". It never has been one.

If you keep trying though....you might just get it. Start by taking a look at the Constitution. That should help you get there eventually.

Hmmm...I have zero patience for fanatics of any religion. Religious fanatics are creepy. I can spot em' from a mile away....they always have that blank stare in their eyes.

See that is the thing. I will respect anyone's beliefs. I have even taken a couple of course in college to get a better understanding. But once you start trying to force me to believe, or try and force me to take something from your religion that is where we have a problem.

I have had wonderful conversations with people from numerous religions and learned a lot. It is when you cross the line from understand to forcing is where I start getting pissed and I start saying things like I did to those two fellows.

Although I did go talk to the pastor of the church to explain to him what happened because I found out they told him what I said. I told him the only reason I said it was because they kept following me and trying to give me something I didn't want.

Yeah... I'm kind of struggling here, maybe you can help me.

You're a big Obama supporter, right? Based on your sig line.

I guess you were okay with Obama saying that based on Muslim population, the US would be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world? (I'm pretty sure that is inaccurate, anyway, but...)

But even though most of the Founders were Christians of some sort, or Deists who held judeo-christian values in high regard, and even though 78% of Americans self-profess to be Christian, you think its just flat wrong to say this country has Christian roots, or that its foundation was rooted in Christianity?

We don't have a Christian GOVERNMENT, true. That is, we do not have a theocracy and government is expressly warned to keep its paws off religion. But I'd say that 78% is a significant number, if we're talking about what a society professes to believe, and where its roots are.

Would you say that at least 78% of that 78% were indoctrinated as children into the Christian religion?

Exactly. But the right-wing fanatics that try to argue that this is a "Christian Nation" ruin it for the reasonable people who just want to be able to practice their religion and be respected.

No.

I've known plenty of adult converts who were not raised in church.

I'll grant that a majority probably grew up in church, but not all by a long shot.

In any case, doesn't this continue to point to the fact that America has Christian roots, if so many Americans are brought up with Christian families?

(speaking more generically, to whatever dog I may hit with this rock...)

Hey, be a Buddhist or an atheist or whatever, I don't care. I'm not going to try to force you to be a Christian. I don't believe in forcing people to accept Christ, its against my entire belief system.

But don't pretend that judeo-christian traditions and morality were not important in the founding of this country, and don't pretend that Christianity is some tiny group of fanatics who ought to be ignored, mmkay?
