I caught this show on TV, it absolutely disgusts me. We can spend millions on healthcare for illegal immigrants, the ICU care for gangbangers, search and rescues for weekend warriors, corporate bailouts that pay for multi-million dollar bonuses, the list goes on and on. But a paralyzed Iraq war vet isn't disabled enough to get occupational retraining?

Wounded Veterans' New Fight: The VA - CBS Evening News - CBS News

(CBS) Former Army medic Jeremy Smith was wounded and paralyzed in Afghanistan. Clearly qualified for both medical and pension benefits, Smith was surprised when a Veteran's Affairs counselor told him he wasn't disabled enough for vocational benefits.

"How can I not be disabled enough? How much more disabled do I need to be," Smith asked. "Should I go throw myself under a bus real quick?"

This is an outrage and fits into the the Liberal's anti-veteran agenda. Janet Nepolitano said that returning Vets are a threat and this is how they get even with our heroes who did their duty.
I know Nepolitano and and have confronted her and this beatch and those who support her are cut from the same cloth in the Obama Administration who all feel like if someone fights for what are American values it is wrong in their eyes.

We as Americans need to say enough is enough and kick them out of office ASAP.

This reminds me of a scene from: Born on the 4th of July, where the medical intern tells Tom Cruise, "If you're not part of the solution, you must be part of the problem".

The VA has always had a bad rep from the disabled vets. They really do need to have more compassion. I guess you get callous after a few years of broken heroes. They need to straighten up now.

This has been policy for a long time. There are benefits awarded based on percentages of disability. As much as it would be fun to pin this on the current administration, its really not a fair criticism.

I am 70% disabled (cumulatively) and still not eligible for vocational rehabilitation training (and in fairness I dont need the help). Its the way the system works.

A lot of people believe the VA exists to serve all servicemembers past present and future. thats simply not the case. the VA serves disabled veterans. MOST retired servicemen and women get their healthcare benefits either at a regular military hospital or through Tricare insurance. There are different levels of insurance offered and they range from free basic services to premium services with annual premiums and copays, like virtually any other healthcare plan. Just the premiums are much more affordable. Thats a benefit that is offered in lieu of a commitment of 20+ years.

Thats just too generic of a statement. There ARE horror stories and those need to be corrected...but my experience has been that the VA does a stellar job with the vets. Where services cant be provided they are typically contracted out.

Unfortunately, SOME vets are just like SOME citizens...when they go to the VA they have an idea of what they WANT...and the VA often determines they either do not qualify for the benefit or that isnt a NEED. and thats USUALLY when the fur flies.

that doesnt discount the legit horror stories...in any way. But those horror stories are probably identical to any civilian hospital setting.

Yes, this. I do volunteer work with Vets, and I have seen the VA personnel go above and beyond what they need to in order to help vets. I know a person who works at the VA who uses most of her lunch breaks to pick up vets and bring them in, taking them back home after her shift as just one example. I believe that most people who work at the VA do so because they enjoy helping veterans.

Nothing is perfect, and the VA is far from it, but they do try hard.

Liblady, looks to me like it is you that wants to make this political. Why do you support Obama on this issue or any other.

Bush took VA Funding from 51 billion in 2002 to 95 billion in fiscal year 2009 and rightly so. The problem continues to be people not the funding and that is the problem with illegal activities of some individuals within corporations and questionable activities of individuals within the Govt. run agencies. Now liberals want to expand that role and responsibility with healthcare?

Hey, some returning vets are a threat; so don't discount her statement completely.

Everything this Administration does is political in nature. They destroy or try to destroy anyone that speaks out against it. It is this Administration that claimed returning Vets were a potential threat and it was this Administration that made Vets a political tool.

it would be nice if you could address the issue for once, but i won't hold my breath. buh-bye.

I have to side with liblady on this one. Its not an Obama admin rule that is denying the individual training. it is a VA rule that has been in place for a long time. Turning EVERY argument into a bash Obammy arguement devalues the valid arguements!

Ok, thanks, my apology to Liblady and all others here. I just don't have a lot of respect for the Obama Administration and sometimes that gets the better of me.

Oh I get the disrespect part...believe me!!! Im just not really hip on how that cant be equally applied to both major political parties. Bush didnt run up 13 trillion dollars in debt. neither did Obama. Congress did...both sides...guilty as hell...

Exactly, and that is why Congress today has a 14% approval rating in some polls. We have Congressional Representatives more interesting in spending money to keep their job instead of being fiscally responsible and doing their job.

I have zero respect for any administration that proposes that Veterans should purchase their own Health Insurance.

Obama has got to be the only President who sends his troops off to fight battles and then claims that because they are volunteers they should be expected to fund their own health care.
