We must not have a bad economy if Obama is more about jobs in England than here. 1 Billion dollar embassy means what to the deficit?

US diplomats add a moat to their expenses at $1bn London embassy - Times Online

The United States has unveiled plans for its new $1 billion high-security embassy in London — the most expensive it has ever built.

The proposals were met with relief from both the present embassy’s Mayfair neighbours and the residents and developers of the Battersea wasteland where the vast crystalline cube, surrounded by a moat, will be built.

The decision to abandon the former site in Grosvenor Square by 2016 came after a prolonged battle with residents angered by the security measures demanded after the September 11 attacks. More than a hundred residents took out a full-page advertisement in The Times to oppose tighter measures that they said would leave the area more vulnerable to attack.

The new embassy, on a former industrial site behind Battersea power station known for its gay clubs, will be designed by Kieran Timberlake, the Philadelphia architect.

Too much money. We should cut that figure in half and hire more Marine guards.

lol, interesting the Battersea Power station can't be much more than a couple of miles up the road from where it currently is. I wonder if they will tear that place down :p 3 of my years in the Navy were spent working right across the street from the embassy, we used to point it out to VIP's when we'd show them around the command. It started out as a joke by my Master Chief to point out to admirals that it was the building used in the Pink Floyd album with the inflatable pig. It was a little intimidating as a 3rd Class, but it seemed otherwise pointless to show them the roof with nothing more than a bunch of radio antennas. Sorry, that doesn't really contribute to the subject, but the mention of the embassy combined with the power station brought back memories I felt like sharing :p

I don't remember a lot of residents in the area, if it was intrusive to the locals I can't imagine there were very many. It was prime real estate though, a short walk to Hyde Park, or the corner of Oxford and Baker.

Either way, it sounds like excessive spending. The command I was stationed at was shut down due to unnecessary cost. It didn't serve much of a purpose beyond that of an incredible European vacation. One that I will always be grateful to the American Taxpayer for :p

I agree it is too much money, but.. "hire" more Marine guards? Did not know that the US marines was a private army since they have to be hired to guard their political masters.. does that mean they can say no too?

looks like obama is picking up where bush left off........

The Marines will be okay, the new area is known for its gay clubs. The move has been on the cards for a long time, pre-crunch in fact, and will bring much-needed relief to the insanely rich residents of Mayfair.

This article is from October '08
" ..."As the United Kingdom is our best friend and best ally, we wanted to be as close to parliament and government buildings as the current site and we have achieved that."
Mr Tuttle said the current embassy would be available for sale almost immediately, as long as the move was approved by US Congress and planning authorities in Britain.
He said the announcement was only the start of a "multi-year, multi-stage" process which could take up to five years.
The current embassy was always an oddity in the US diplomatic set-up because of the lease arrangement with the Duke of Westminster - virtually every other major mission is owned outright by the US.
The Duke reportedly said he would only sell if the US government returned his family's land, confiscated during the American War of Independence. ... "

I think it is pretty clear what I mean.

Or do you disagree with the principle that the military answer to and are guided/ordered around by the political establishment?

Seems to me you are the one that has the issue, by calling them MASTERS. Do you look at it as a master/slave relationship?

Obama is president, not the emperor. Therefore he is not the United States government. Besides, the architects were probably the ones who inflated the price.

This falls under the State Department that Obama and Hillary are responsible for.

LOL...What a difference a year and $300 million makes...;)

U.S. Embassy in Iraq Largest, Most Expensive Ever

After much delay the United States opened its new $700 million embassy in Iraq on Monday, inaugurating the largest — and most expensive — embassy ever built.

The 104-acre compound, bigger than the Vatican and about the size of 80 football fields...

Master/servant, Owner/slave. Why would you connect master to slavery?
