The White House press room was a jovial place to be in the early days of President Barack Obama's presidency. But times have changed.

Back in May, POLITICO analyzed the press briefings and found that the instances of laughter — as indicated by "(Laughter)" being noted in the official transcript — occurred more than 10 times per day during press secretary Robert Gibbs's briefings.

But the laughter has been reduced by half in recent months: In the first six months of the Obama administration, briefings produced an average of 179 laughs per month. Over the past six months, the average has dropped down to 89.

Chalk it up to the close of any administration's initial honeymoon — and the Obama administration's tough second half of 2009, as it wrestled with health care and saw the late Ted Kennedy's U.S. Senate seat filled by a Republican.

"The tone is one reason for less laughter," says American Urban Radio's April Ryan. "There are lots of serious questions begging for serious answers. Those questions do not meld with laughter and light banter."

I fail to see why delivering the news of the white house needs to be funny.
Moreover - I fail to see how Gibbs is delivering any news at all - he really comes out and says nothing and tries to make a funny and goes away.
 
I think this is a reflection on Gibbs. He needs to change his tune, he embarrassing his boss.

Repubs will claim that every member of Obama's admin must go because that's what democrats said about all of the Bush admin. Warranted or not, it's petty and childish tit for tat. *yawn*

If it was reported that laughter increased ten-fold, then people would be complaining that Gibbs is not taking the matter seriously enough, and is doing terribly at his job because of it.

What the hell? Since when is a reduction in laughter a sign of being unprofessional?

Wouldn't the guy telling MORE jokes the unprofessional one?

Also, isn't the fact that someone even bothered to measure laughter in the press room nuts?

which is exactly what you are objecting to

and barney was a very conservative, judgmental, intolerant dork, always picking at scabs. he would never be a democrat
