Russia, which is set to hold a monopoly on flights to the international space station (ISS), wants to charge more for rides on its Soyuz rocket, the space agency head said Tuesday.
"At a meeting of the space agency chiefs in Tokyo, I want to discuss the maintenance of transport to the station," Roskomos head Anatoly Perminov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.
"We have an agreement until 2012 that Russia will be responsible for this. But after that? Excuse me but the prices should be absolutely different then!"
When NASA retires its long-serving shuttle fleet as planned later this year, the United States and other countries will be wholly dependent on Russia to fly the station's six-man crew to and from orbit.
NASA has signed a deal worth 306 million dollars (224 million euros) with Roskomos for six rides to the ISS in 2012 and 2013, or a charge of 51 million dollars per US astronaut.
See how this works, the US dependent on Russia and others for manned space missions. It's like before Sputnik! :doh

they will soon be the only game in town, so they can get away with it.

You can always subcontract to China

They can get you to space cheaper then Russia or the domestic US industry.

Ya one thing I do not like about the current government is their willingness to let our space program suffer like this

The decision to end using the Space shuttle was made more then a few years ago.

And creating a replacement is going to take more then 1 year

It is also going to cost a lot of money

But it is worth the money that's what the president doesn't get.

Did the new president cut the funding for developing a new space delivery system?

Actually he canceled the program that was already under development. According to an aquaintance of mine, who is literally a rocket scientist, they were far enough along on the new launch vehicles that it will end up costing MORE to scrap that and come up with something new.

That's in the new Obama budget, so yes, this one is on Barry.

Precisely, most people don't understand the cost to end a program. They think you just turn off the lights and walk away. It's cost money to end contracts, many jobs will be losts on account of this.....many good high paying jobs.
