Justice Alito mouths 'not true'

It shows he has no control over his emotions. Oh, and the camera is rolling. I might feel differently if there weren't TV cameras all over the place. But you are a public figure when on national TV, and I think you should show restraint.

I guess supreme court justices ARE human... and not just old wrinkly hags with bad haircuts.

Alito could school Barry on the Constitution any day of the week.

As an outsider to the US I have to ask

Why is it more important as to who said what to whom than what they were disagreeing about?

I don't know but here we would be arguing the merits of the decision and the proposed amendment rather than dissing people disagreeing

But then our system is inherently adversarial

Going back to at least Ford, this was the first time that a President took a swipe at the Supreme Court during a State of the Union. Not only did Obama take a swipe at them, he straight up lied about the case - and he knows it.

In the face of that, what was the horrible thing that Alito did? Did he stand up and object? No. Did he call Obama a liar? No. While other people wre clapping, he turned his head a few inches toward Sotomayor and inaudibly muttered what looks like "not true." Horror of horrors.

Nevertheless, this type of thing is why Rehnquist was right when he said that Justices should not attend these events.
This specious spittle from a man that taught Constitutional Law at Harvard.
(They must be embarrassed to no end in Cambridge.)
I wonder, was it the Cuban Constitution he taught there? Nobody asked.

Actually he taught at the University of Chicago Law School, not Harvard.

It is difficult to understand the level of actual anger against Alito here. Even if it was inappropriate to quietly say "that's not true" on a factual assertion by the President, it certainly doesn't warrant this kind of reaction.

It could be worse:

Daily Kos: Activist Alito must be impeached

How Aps got the idea that this is a display of loss of emotional control is a flight in fantasy you will need some sturdy wings to undertake.

I guess this is Ried failing to control his emotions too......

It's reminding me of this:

Oh, you're assuming that his misrepresentation was intentional. LOL Okay.

Yea, it's more likely that this was just a mistake on his part due to the off the cuff nature of his remarks. It's not like speechwriters carefully craft every single syllable of the SOTU to be exceedingly precise with their message. :2razz:

Turkey snort!!! :2no4: Oh it burns! Alito MUST DIE.

Considering the fact these corrupt creatures just hammered in a bunch of nails in the coffin of our democracy, I think they got off light, myself.

Such outlandish hyperbole. Tell me, what's the difference between the before and after? Be specific, if you can...

You know, that also reminds me that we had another president recently who had a graduate degree from Harvard, and his opponents weren't shy about questioning his intelligence. And he actually had a clue how to run the country.

I think he was getting a great deal of direction from Karl Rove, and Cheney's influence cannot be overlooked - not that those are bad things; having competent cabinet members is crucial to a Presidency; it's too bad Obama doesn't understand that. It seems the only one who knows what's going on in his cabinet is Bush's SEC DEV...:rofl

I mean, David Axelrod and Rahm Emmanuel? These guys are the quintessential Chicago politicians. How in God's name we could trust national security and economic policy to a couple of lightweights like that is beyond me. Why don't we put Blagojevich in charge of Homeland Security while we're at it?

Really America...

I am merely disgusted. He has to defend himself? Did Obama call him a name? Justice Roberts remained stonefaced, which is what someone with class does.

Obama lied. Is that something a classy person does?

What's new here? What did he disrupt? If it hadn't been caught on camera, would anyone know it happened, including anyone sitting behind or in front of him (and most people to either side, for that matter)? No. I'd hardly call that a "disruption."

Why this is such a big deal to you is beyond me.

Hmmmm. I am writing about it on here. I spoke with my husband about it when it came up on the news we were watching. That's the extent of my discussions about it.

I'm just disgusted that a Supreme Court Justice doesnt' have better manners than that. Kennedy and Roberts were part of the majority with Kennedy being the author and both of them had the class to not react.

Frankly, such a blatant lie by our President, I'm surpised most of the SCOUTS didn't rush the podium and pummel Obama into ground meat. It's one thing to stretch the truth or spin, but such an outright lie at a State of the Union address with the SCOTUS sitting right in front of Obama - and Obama supposedly being a Constitutional Professor at Hahvahd... not only was the action by Obama one of the biggest lies ever... but done in front of millions is unfortunately par for the course with this President.

You see his MO is... spend trillions then afterwards, hold a speech about fiscal responsibility. Sign a bill for 800 billion with 9,000 pork laden ear marks and then call on Congress for less pork and the posting of ear marks on the web. The American Indians used to call that a "forked tongue".

Can you tell me how it's a blatant lie what he said? It matches with what Stevens said in his dissent. Please share with me in detail how what he stated was a blatant lie. I'm still waiting for someone else to provide me evidence of such and NO ONE has done so.

Ignoring the fact that what you posted was partially in essence what I've been saying, that its ridiculous to just criticize Alito when it could be equally said that Obama did wrong too, your article is a bit off

Alito didn't use it as a forum for presenting opinions. He didn't get up on a mic. He didn't stand up and state it out loud. He did not wave his arms going "look at me, look at me". He had a quick instant reaction while in the crowd of a speech. That's not trying to use it as a "forum" to present his opinion, that's reacting to something.

Should he have reacted that way? Not really. But it was no more classless, no more uncalled for, no more unacceptable than Obama's OWN breach of decorum and class that spurred it

Usually, when presidents speak at the State of the Union, they talk about their strategy for what they'd like to see done in the United States. Obama would like to see legislation to address the repercussions of this Supreme Court decision. While what he did was unusual, it's not a breach of decorum.

Obama lied. Is that something a classy person does?

Please provide me evidence that Obama lied. Otherwise, I won't believe it.

The fact is that President Obama dissed the SCOTUS, an equal branch of government. He did this in a totally inappropriate way in a venue which the justices could not defend there decision.

And the truth is either the president deliberatly lied or was unaware that the court specifically ruled in three places that foreign corporations or individuals may not fund political advertisements and influence federal elections.

So which is it. Did the president lie again or was he simply misinformed. I say he deliberatly lied and he took a jab at the SCOTUS to please the democrats who stood up and applauded when he lied through his teeth.

Would you please provide evidence that he knew he was lying? I can't wait to see what you come up with. I'm waiting.............

I seem to remember that you had an entirely different opinion when Bush mentioned in his SOTU that British Intelligence had informed the U.S. that Iraq was seeking yellowcake from Nigeria??

but that was different.... right?

I will give you the 100 years part since I find no actual references to anything over 20 years old. However, isn't it that since they didn't touch the foreign contribution part, it is why it left open the possibility?

Any sane person would conclude that if they didn't change the law about foreign electioneering, it would still be the same law..... what is your confusion here?

Why is it more important as to who said what to whom than what they were disagreeing about?
Tradition. If you can't defend the case on the merits, you attack the messenger. Obama's misrepresentations (to use the current euphemism) are indefensible, so it is necessary to attack anyone reacting negatively to them.

Already done. Read the thread....

Forget it, she read that post and skipped right past the part that proved Barry lied....... some people are in serious denial about the character of this usurper.

Hey, yall be nice to aps...or I'll....I'll tell on you.

Contrary to what we were sold, Obama and company seem to have a knack for alienating people. Considering the sorry state of our economy, they might want to work on their people skills, that is, if they want a chance to keep their jobs in 2012.
