Unbelievable. What in the hell is happening to the right in this country? They are truly beginning to slide into the toilet. I hope that any Conservative who reads this will make a decision to kick CPAC to the curb. It is giving the Conservative movement one hell of a black eye.

I am going to take a slightly different course here. I went the the John Birch Society webpage(- The John Birch Society) and did a bit of reading. While they are far right, and to my mind wrong about everything, I did not find anything in 15 to 20 minutes of reading to suggest they are any more wacky than any far right or left organization of today. Even the wiki article on them does nothing to make the think that currently they are any more objectionable than any group on the outskirts of the political spectrum.

So instead of getting all worked up about this, I want to ask you all a question: what is it about JBS today(not 20 years ago) that makes this so worth of criticism?

Totally fair/reasonable question. But your premise needs to be examined, i.e. that all you need do to discover whether an organization deserves your support or interest is look at what they say about themselves on their website or in their publications.

The JBS has a 50-year sordid history of defaming virtually all of our national political leaders (Democrat and Republican) over the past 8 decades. The JBS was responsible for a change in American libel law. After 14 years of litigation, including 2 jury trials, several appeals, and review by the U.S. Supreme Court, the JBS paid Chicago lawyer Elmer Gertz $100,000 in compensatory damages and $300,000 in punitive damages because of false and libelous comments contained in a JBS magazine article which discussed Gertz. Punitive damages are only permitted when "malice" can be shown -- i.e. "reckless disregard for truth".

The JBS now uses vague and ambiguous terminology in its publications so as to avoid more libel lawsuits. They usually substitute "Insiders" or "elites" for former terms such as "Marxist", "Communist" "Communist sympathizer" etc.

I suggest you review my report on the JBS which is based upon first-time-released FBI documents and files to discover why J. Edgar Hoover and senior FBI officials concluded that the JBS was "extremist", "irrational", "irresponsible" -- among other pejorative descriptions.
