Poor befuddled John McCain.

Flashback: McCain Refused To Grant 30 Seconds Of Time During Iraq War Debate

Yesterday, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), acting on the orders of the Senate leadership, refused to grant Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) “an additional moment” to continue speaking on the Senate floor after his 10 minutes expired. Franken’s objection caused Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to groan about how Franken’s move was unprofessional, unprecedented, and disrespectful:

McCAIN: I’ve been around here 20-some years. First time I’ve ever seen a member denied an extra minute or two to finish his remarks. … I just haven’t seen it before myself. And I don’t like it. And I think it harms the comity of the Senate not to allow one of our members at least a minute. I’m sure that time is urgent here, but I doubt that it would be that urgent.

Unfortunately, McCain’s memory is suffering. In fact, McCain has engaged in the very same behavior that he was criticizing Franken for yesterday.

On October 10, 2002 — just ahead of the looming mid-term elections — the Senate rushed a debate on a war authorization giving President Bush the power to use force against Iraq. The resolution ultimately passed the Senate after midnight on an early Friday morning by a vote of 77-23.

During the course of the frenzied floor debate, then-Sen. Mark Dayton (D-MN) spoke in favor of an amendment offered by Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) that would have restricted Bush’s constitutional powers to wage war against Iraq. After a minute and a half, Dayton ran out of time, prompting this exchange:

The PRESIDING OFFICER. The Senator’s time has expired.

Mr. DAYTON. I ask for unanimous consent that I have 30 seconds more to finish my remarks.

Mr. McCAIN. I object.

Byrd stepped in to grant Dayton time to finish his remarks. But just moments later, Byrd asked for more time to speak for himself. Again, McCain objected, prompting Byrd to chide him for doing so. “This shows the patience of a Senator,” Byrd said. “This clearly demonstrates that the train is coming down on us like a Mack truck, and we are not even going to consider a few extra minutes for this Senator.”

After being publicly shamed, McCain acquiesced to Byrd’s request. But moments later, McCain added this disclaimer: “I wish to say very briefly that I understand people have a desire to speak. We have a number of Senators who have not spoken on this issue. It is already looking as if we may be here well into this evening. From now on, I will be adhering strictly to the rules.”

In other words, he acted just like Franken did yesterday.

Seems like both McCain's and Lieberman's memories fail them when the shoe is on the other foot!

:rofl

McCain being a dick in 2002 does not excuse Franken being a dick in 2009. Matter of fact it makes you look petty. Franken was being an asshole for no reason.

John McCain the old hypocrite, but I still agree with Hatuey on this one. I agree that this doesn't let Franken off the hook for being a dick.

Evidently, you missed the first sentence of the article:

What? I thought all the congress critters were dicks? It's just some are bigger dicks than others. ;)

I find it telling how some of these overinflated egos go into overheat mode when they think a freshman senator is overstepping his bounds. How dare he! Franken has a way to go until he gets to be as big as dick as McCain or Lieberman. Most of these self loving above the law dickheads just ramble anyway when they get up to the podium. Another minute just makes the boredom of listening to them that much more excruciating.

Franken has been a bigger dick than McCain since well before he got elected to the Senate.

Doubtful. Franken hasn't even had time to learn the ropes yet like those old cons (pros).

Don't think it makes the poster petty, rather this says more about McCain's mental ability. It could be excused on account of McCain's advancing age or perhaps this is just another revelation of the true McCain.

McCain at one time was the Tiger Woods of politics. A hero above all the rest of the politicians.
But then like Tiger the image began to slide off.
During Kerry's running McCain couldn't make up his mind if he was a Rep or Dem if there was a chance he could be on the ticket.
Then during his own campaign he showed more of this real self doing the ridiculous ploy of suspending his campaign to go to D.C. so that he could save the nation with the bailout. This ploy was only topped by the ill advised theatrics of picking Palin and Joe the Plumber as running mates.
Tiger and McCain at one time both had my respect. Perhaps their problem could be stemmed to both marrying blondes.

Franken may have been a dick, but at least he showed he has some balls. That is sorely lacking in the Democrat party.

Damn straight. If Republicans are so intent on voting against anything and everything the Dems put forth just to spite them (and, as a result, ignorantly spiting themselves :doh ), then who needs them? What purpose are they actually serving other than to hinder the business of our government? Who needs that crap?

Frankly, I'd like to see a lot more of this kind of "No, you can kindly now **** off. We're not going to tolerate any more of your hypocritical obstructionist antics."

Good God, elected representatives voting based on their views and the views of their constituents? Who needs that crap?!?

As usual Glinda you don't report all of the facts. The Sen. in question had already been given an extra 30 seconds before asking for another 30 seconds but hey nothing like the truth stopping you from making a Hack post now is it.

I would prefer them to have balls when it matters, not have balls by being a dick over nothing.

Well put Redress he is quickly become one of the most dislike person in Congress.

Okay, so they've all acted like dicks from time to time. We get it. The left of course more than the right. ;)

You sir are on a roll today.

Only by the right. The rest of us thought it was pretty darned funny.

Hey if I had a nickel for every time the word dick was used in this thread I could by a Big Mac.

The republicans don't have the votes to be obstructionists. Nice try. Your own party is who is obstructing you. The democrats are more moderate than you think and irk at their own far-left wing, deal with it.

Glinda, I hope you bring this little tidbit up next time McCain runs for president. Don't forget now, ya hear?

McCain run for president? Ha Ha! He's got one foot in the grave and another on a banana peel. Four years short of 80 in 2012. Kind of desperate running a guy that old aren't we partner? :rofl

Not a chance in hell of McCain getting the bid if Sarah has anything to say about it.
She would jump on that bid like jumping on a sale at LensCrafters.

I thought you people knew that people in congress generally were dicks and had little manners? Okay. You can't say that all of the congress people are dicks. That would be an untrue statement. About 95% of them are... this shouldn't alarm anyone really. I don't really care if anyone in congress is being a dick to anyone else.
