Mother sparks outrage by tweeting as rescue workers try to save dying two-year-old son | Mail Online

Yesterday, a police spokesman said Ross’s 11-year-old son, who had been cleaning out the chicken coup at the family’s home in Merritt Island, Florida, had called an ambulance after noticing his brother had fallen into the water.

Ross sent her first tweet at 10.22pm British time on Monday – just a minute before the 999 call was made.

i find this to be horrifying. is it an addiction, or is she a narcissist? both?

8445 tweets? Wow, definitely addictive behavior.

I wouldn't see a problem with posting about the death - she was a pro blogger, and many use twitter almost as a chatroom, so, it would be a place she'd seek support from friends.

Posting even before calling 911 (if that's what happened, and the time stamps aren't out of sync) is completely unbelievable, though.

Ass Beating Tweets?

This woman had 5000 subscribers, the article says. I'll bet the woman is so wrapped up in her Twitter world that she wasn't watching her son well enough. Doesn't she have a fence around her pool? Shouldn't a 2 year old be supervised?

This woman made some telling comments in response to her critics

In response to her critics, Ross said, "Anybody who is attacking me on Twitter is a small-minded a**hole who deserves to rot in hell."

"People who are attacking me are just trying to drive attention to their blogs," she added.

Shellie Ross Twitter: Mom Tweets Son's Death in Pool - ABC News

The woman lives in a fantasy world of blogs and tweets, where ones self esteem is measured by how many follow your narcissistic ramblings online.

Crap, I am really disappointed. When I saw the title of the thread, I came right in, believing that Sylvester the Cat had finally caught that obnoxious little bugger.

My guess would be that this is akin to
"Muchausin's by Proxy." I'd guess further, that this was not a true accident.

You wouldn't see a problem with this!? Her son is DEAD. Why is she even thinking about Twitter!?

I think she meant AFTER his death...not during the incident.

I understand. I don't see how it makes things any different. You need to Tweet that your child is dead? Have people lost their minds?

Eh, different people use different methods to get empathy and support. It would be like someone posting something like that here, at DP. If folks see people as an important and supportive network, they will share information like this, there.

Fair enough.

Yes, this, exactly.

Also, remember, she is a professional blogger who used twitter, in part, to promote her writing.

I think it's reasonable to assume that a good part of her support network is there on that site.

Agreed. Like I said before, that's insane.

I've encountered women like this online, though. There are a lot of very isolated, lonely SAHMs. Some of them should probably consider getting part-time jobs and getting back out into the world since staying at home is not meeting their social needs. I wonder how much kids are neglected because of the internet in some cases.

There is social pressure these days for women to stay at home and raise their kids, but some women just aren't suited for it, frankly.

I was a stay at home dad for well over a year and a half. Thankfully, I am a bit of a loner and grew up as an only child so my social needs aren't great. If you are someone who craves attention and likes to talk to people all the time, I can see how being a stay at home parent would drive you to the internet. Although it certainley doesn't excuse tweeting or blogging about your child as they are dying.

The first tweet was a call to pray for her son and came a few minutes after she called 999.

If she has 5000 followers maybe she was thinking that could lead to 5000 prayers for her son.

I don't believe that's going to do **** to help, but obviously some people (perhaps the majority?) think prayers can help in these situations or they wouldn't ask for them when things like this happen.

I don't know the entirety of what she posted, but according to the article:

As paramedics tried to revive him, Ross, who used the online name ‘Military-Mom’, posted the note: ‘Please pray like never before, my 2 yr old fell in the pool.’

That was the first tweet after the accident.

Well what else could she do? The paramedics are already there, so she's doing the only thing she can think of that may actually help her child, call for people to pray for his/her safety.

I see nothing at all wrong with that. I don't agree that these prayers were going to do anything, but to attack this woman for doing what she obviously thought might help her child is sick in it's own way.

Now, if she had been tweeting about her shoes or something, the outrage would make sense. But outrage over tweeting for prayers for her child?!?!?!?

Come on.

Good on her. It probably kept her a little less frantic than the Mom who would otherwise be getting in the paramedics way and screaming and ranting. Perhaps twitter made the work of those paramedics a little less stressful for a few seconds. Who knows...

****, asking for prayers would be one of the last things on my mind but that doesn't stop other people from doing it during these situations.

I'm fairly sure I couldn't have done it. I liked working a split schedule, though...3 days in the office and 2 at home.
