The three senators have quietly inserted a provision into the Democrats' healthcare overhaul that would allow the Christian Science church to receive remuneration from the federal government for prayer treatments as medical expenses.

Another reason why this "healthcare" bill is nothing but ****ing bull****! Not only do my taxes would be going to assholes who dont want to pay for their own ****ing insurance now they want to funnel them to a ****ing church???!!! What about Separation between Church and ****ing state!!!!?????? I really hope Kerry and Hatch get a nice painful and incurable disease alongside all in Washington who supporting this crap!

Aside from them making a mockery of what's legitimate altnernative medicine and what isn't and all those things. . .
It's also hypocritical on a religious level - you should never be expected to be compensated in any way for your prayers for someone. Prayer isn't a commodity, whether you believe in it's power or not, it's suppose to be out of kindness and concern for the person, not your pocketbook.

this doesn't seem to be the case......does the IRS recognize paryer as a legitimate medical expense?
"The amendment would prevent insurers from discriminating against benefits that qualify as spiritual care if the care is recognized by the IRS as a legitimate medical expense," Smith is quoted as saying. "Plans are free to impose standards on spiritual and medical care as long as both are treated equally. It does not mandate that plans provide spiritual care."

According to Hamburger and Geiger, the proposal would have a negligible overall cost on the bill, as the Church has fewer than 1,800 branches worldwide and continues to see membership declines. Prayer treatments cost from $20 to $40 a day -- which the church describes as competitive with medical care.

Faith-healers are now recognized as legitimate healthcare providers?

Dunno, how about I let my two dogs (German Shepard and Rottweiler) chew them up for awhile and instead of going to a hospital let them try their version of care and see if it works.

It seems like this might only be legitimate if it was for counseling, or therapy, or some such.

I hope it doesn't mean straight up praying for a sick person. That would be messed up.
