SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (CNN) -- Former Costa Rican President Rafael Calderon was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of corruption during his term.

Former Costa Rican President Rafael Calderon, right, listens to his sentence on Monday in a San Jose court.

It was the first time in Costa Rica's history that a former president had been tried for corruption.

Calderon had previously stated his intention to run for the presidency again in 2010.

Calderon, who was president from 1990 to 1994, was accused of embezzling government funds from the state's social security system.

Dang..it is refreshing to see a country actually act responsibly and hold their ex-Presidents accountable for the past crimes they have committed.

I'm sure that the world will only have respect for the current Costa Rica Government for taking this criminal to task.

That's funny why wouldn't people want to discuss another countries ability to convict and sentence their past president for crimes he committed?

Meh. calderon got caught stealing about half a million from a Finnish loan to the Costa Rican social security fund. Calderon split it with 8 other scumbags and they were caught, prosecuted and sentenced. He didnt even get the biggest cut of the loot.

What is there to discuss? It seems like a pretty clear case of grand larceny.

Yes I do agree that his crimes were pretty cut and dry. I just find it refreshing to see that there are actually countries out there who do not try to hide and wash over there ex-presidents past crimes.

By the way...have you noticed how Clinton ran and hid after his term was over and has nothing public to say that benifits his country or supports it positive progerssion forward?

I haven't noticed that where Clinton is concerned...but really only a true cowardly criminal would do that wouldn't you agree? I would imagine that is how the Costa Rican ex-president acted before they tried and convicted him for his crimes.

Bill Clinton Made Millions From Foreign Companies In 2008

"WASHINGTON — Former President Bill Clinton earned nearly $6 million in speaking fees last year, almost all of it from foreign companies, according to financial documents filed by his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The documents obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press show that $4.6 million of the former president's reported $5.7 million in 2008 honoraria came from foreign sources, including Kuwait's national bank, other firms and groups in Canada, Germany, India, Malaysia, Mexico and Portugal and a Hong Kong-based company that spent $100,000 on federal lobbying last year."

Given Slick Willies mental pathologies it is not possible for him to close his mouth for any length of time. (AKA babbling Carter Syndrome). Smart of him to take advantage of it making millions off foreign investors.

I would imagine that in the end if such a cowardly criminal has let's say a daughter that is his only soul remaining supporter she might even be out defending him. No matter how ridiculous it sounds.

Calderon has a wife. The first female diplomat of Costa Rica. I dont see anything about him having a daughter.
