Senate Finance Committee Democrats rejected a proposed a requirement that immigrants prove their identity with photo identification when signing up for federal healthcare programs.
Finance Committee ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said that current law and the healthcare bill under consideration are too lax and leave the door open to illegal immigrants defrauding the government using false or stolen identities to obtain benefits.
Grassley's amendment was beaten back 10-13 on a party-line vote.
The bill, authored by committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), would require applicants to verify their names, places of birth and Social Security numbers. In addition, legal immigrants would have to wait five years, as under current law, after obtaining citizenship or legal residency to access federal healthcare benefits such as Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program or receive tax credits or purchase insurance through the exchange created by the legislation.
Why do the Democrats even allow the appearance of being easy on illegals, when they are under fire for just that reason?

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but if the "Baucus Bill" already requires proof of ID by virtue of name, birth and SSN verification which would mean showing some form of personal ID card, birth certificate and SSN card, why would Senate Dems have a problem with photo IDs unless there was some proposal that called for photo IDs only since the bill was first introduced?

I don't get this issue at all...???

I don't get why they're against it. Don't we want to be certain about who gets benefits.

The Baucus bill already makes it certain who gets the benefits. But since this is our government, the duplicate requirement should be made a rule inside the "Department of Redundancy Department".

If illegal immigrants are stealing identities, how is a requirement to provide identification going to stop them from getting access to this new health care system?

Also, why make new legal immigrants wait 5 years? What's the sense in creating an underclass out of law-abiding citizens?

When you start a new job, you have to present a SS card or a birth certificate AND a photo id.

Why should signing up for health care be any different?

There's a show coming on the TV that addresses how the minorities are on track to become the new majority. And, by looking at the film trailers, it deals primarily with the latino population.

"Why?" one asks? Perhaps it's part of a 20 year plan.

You guys ready for change?

Here it comes. :(
