Yes, I have lost my mother. I didn't use that as an excuse to be a jackass though.

I know slang. I also know that some slang makes people sound mentally handicapped.

Not always. It's also a way to get a point across in ways that you can't with normal english (like the word "grock"), or to show membership of a cultural group.
