I thought the treehuggers told us there was no more oil in the Gulf. Guess they were wrong, again.

You do know where this oil is found right?... 7 miles down...

It will take at least 10 years to get a single drop out ... at least.

Again, so what? Doing nothing isn't going to produce that pool, nor is doing nothing going to create jobs. There will be oil flowing out of that resevoir before green energy come close to maturity.

And the debate is whether or not "tree-huggers" provide assessments of petro deposits that are as accurate as exploration?

And using billions on this oil instead of alternative energy.... which you think is better for the future?

Doing both would be better for the future.

People don't want future jobs. They want jobs, now. What positive effect will sky unemployment have on the future. If no one has any money, there won't be any green energy research taking place, therefore, green energy technologies will never reach maturity.

Doing both would be better for the future.

That's exactly right.

OMG!!! We're saved!

From your article:

1) It could raise BP's production levels by 1%!!!!..... Holy sht! That's alot!

And 3 Billion barrels is like 37 days of World consumption!

But it will take the 30 years for the field to play out.....bummer.

So literally it's a drop in the bucket.

So, your solution, is to do nothing? How's that been working for us, so far?

The job prospects in this case are very limited even if you add all the add-on jobs up. Like it or not the oil industry is not a "people" heavy industry. The cost of getting the oil out of the ground is going to be huge and I bet BP is betting on 100+ dollar oil in the near future or at least before the oil comes on-line in a decades time or so.

For me it is a cost benefit thing.. either we drill like mad to keep our drug habit going with oil, or we find alternatives and slowly ween ourselves off the drug called oil. By investing billions in finding oil, we not only promote a continuing oil consumption, but we also "piss in our pants" .. as we have not invested in alternatives to take over when oil runs out.

Now that aint saying we should not drill for oil at all, nor not exploit this find. My worry is that governments and especially the American, will bow to petro industry pressure and limit investment in alternative energy while move that money into more oil searching.

My solution? Is to keep on drilling where it's allowed now and fund renewable energy projects. And Nuclear energy is fine by me as well.

Also tax the crap out of fossil fuels and use the revenue to offset income taxes on the middle class.

And using billions on this oil instead of alternative energy.... which you think is better for the future?
I suspect the market will be able to sort that out.

The oil and gas industry isn't people heavy? Got any numbers to prove that?

The oil companies are in the energy business. They're the folks that are going to be the leaders in alternative energy. The problem, is that alternative energy isn't practicle.

You were doing good, until that last sentence. Punitive taxes are going to kill jobs and raise energy prices, thereby hurting the economy.

Why only "where its allowed"?

Well this is a rather shortsighted view of the problem and solution.

What do you think would happen to consumer goods if you "tax the crap out of fossil fuels"

I'll give him a hint: it sure as hell isn't coming out of the oil companies' bottom lines.

I suspect the market will be able to sort that out.

You mean like it has not done so far? Face it the market is broken because the oil companies have far too much power in the political sphere.

No, the market is broken because the government has far too much power in the economic sphere. If the government weren't so involved in manipulating the market, the oil companies' power in government would be meaningless.

Once again, the government is a sickness masquerading as its own cure.

I sure they would rise to the same extent income taxes would be offset.

But now you have incentives for consumers and companies to save energy.

How is the government manipulating the market to the extent it is causing a rise in prices for Americans?

The oil and gas industry isn't people heavy? Got
any numbers to prove that?

Last I looked it was under 500.000 people in the US.

and many of them are not Americans..

U.S. Oil Industry Kills 100+ Workers A Year

Now you might say "wow 500k people".. yea but taking out the non-American's then how far do you think that number will go?

The oil companies are in the energy business.

No they are in the oil business. They dabble in other energy sources but that is more for public relations than anything else. Most of their investments is in oil, more oil and even more oil. They, along with their partners in automotabiles, had managed to stop any mandatory mileage requirement for cars and trucks in the US for over 20 years and a bunch of other things.. like preventing investment in alternative energy.

They're the folks that are going to be the leaders in alternative energy. The problem, is that alternative energy isn't practicle.

So when are they going to start? Is it Shell, Exxon or what not that is the leader in solar, hydro electrical power, or even wind energy? No, and far from it. All they focus on is oil.. more oil and then some oil. If they could find a way to grow oil in trees then they would invest in that.

I sure they would rise to the same extent income taxes would be offset.

But now you have incentives for consumers and companies to save energy.

Instead of screwing them from one direction, you want to screw them from another. At least income taxes have deductions, credits and writeoffs. High prices don't.

Yea live in a dream world.. It was the "market" that prevented the US from lowering its average miles per gallon numbers for 30 years.. yea right......

So, you don't really have a clue how many people are employed because of oilfield operations?

Don't be so naive to think that if the oil companies can find a source of energy that costs less to produce that they can make more profit from, that they won't jump all over it.

They started quite a while back. Where you been? Big Oil has invested billions in alternative energy.
