Obama 'Joker' Artist a Palestinian Arab from Chicago - Barack Obama - Gawker

You know those posters of Obama looking like the Joker from Batman with the word "socialism" underneath? The creator of that creepy image has emerged, and it's not some "real" American from a red state. Far from it.

According to the LA Times, the perpetrator is a 20-year-old University of Chicago Illinois student named Firas Alkhateeb who made the image during his winter break from school using PhotoShop, naturally.

Sometimes, the truth really is stranger than fiction.

THAT'S going to have some people seeing pinwheels.

Everything about this amuses me. The only thing that would make it better would be if he were earning royalties from use of this image as an avatar. I think I'm going to start referring to people who use it as "terrorist supporters."

I still don't understand what the Joker has to do with Socialism. Where's the connection?

Ya got me.

If I were to guess, it's a parody of the pop-art style "HOPE" posters.

Or, it has something to do with grinning while selling a socialist agenda.

Did you read the article? NOTHING about this graphic makes sense. It's being used purely to shock and offend.

I find it funny, personally.

Yea, I did read it. The unknown guy who put in socialism. You know, the guy who doctored the doctored photo. ;) He perhaps wanted to make a connection between the two, or not, I dunno.

Anyway. If there IS a connection, I'm missing it.

I'd put it in the Strange Pictures thread. But Vicchio hardly ever posts anything there.

meh, I don't think there's really anything to "get".

Righties are using it just because it's a way to show their disgust of Obama.

There's a few of Bush as the Joker that woulda been used just as much if they had been around when he was in office.

Yeah,,, I noticed that too. I guess the Leftist MSM "forgot" he's an "Artist".

He's attacking their hero. Of course he's a "perpetrator." Didn't you know it was a crime to mock our fearless leader?

I thought the same thing, except I was wondering that about Obama.

I think the far right is convinced that Obama = Socialism. NOt understanding that he's actually pretty far to the right of socialism.

Who can understand them?

It makes no sense whatsoever since The Joker is a psychotic anarchist. If the artist wanted it to make any kind of sense they shouldve used Dr Doom or Red Skull.

Well yeah, in actual terms, it's pretty obvious. I was just making fun of them here; the only thing that rightists can identify as "socialist" is the USSR and the NHS. :doh

Because he likes wide-scale destruction and disorder? As Christopher Hitchens said of a rival making comparisons of jihadists and anarchists (assuming he wasn't drunk :)), "Bennet in his closing paragraph compares jihadism to 19th-century anarchism, which shows that he hasn't read Proudhon or Bakunin or Kropotkin either." It really applies to all attempts to use "anarchist" as such a crudely pejorative label, I'd say.

Most people don't know that.

So That's why B.O.'s Poll numbers have hit so low, so quick. Less than a year in,,,and spiraling down. He'll surpass Jimmy Carter in less than 2 years.

It doesn't need to make sense. Quite obviously, it's drawing upon some old racist caricatures of black people performed by whites in blackface. We've all seen those images, they are deeply engrained in our collective psyche, and the Joker/Obama morphing punches a nerve, especially for black folks.

That's what it's designed to do, frankly.

I don't like it, I think it's in atrocious taste, but I also believe that the speech we need to protect the most, sometimes, is that which offends us the most deeply.

It's a matter of principle for me to defend the right of some posters here to use it, no matter how tasteless I find their choice. Trust me when I say it significantly lowers my opinion of those who find it acceptable, though.

On the other hand, there is an agent provocateur inside me that does enjoy the fact that we maintain the ability in this nation to engage in such provocative displays. That definitely sets us apart from Europe, the UK and Canada these days. I like mocking some other people's most dearly cherished beliefs, so I have to give up some access to mockery of my own.

It's a curious paradox, then, if you don't approve of the expression of unscrupulous or otherwise unsavory sentiments, but approve of the rigorous exercise of the institution that permits such expression. It stays consistent, though. :)

I don't like the image, I find it offensive and in poor taste, but I do believe it should be allowed, in spite of my disapproval. Of course, it is within the spirit of free speech for me to express my significant disapproval.

It definitely lowers my opinion of the people who have used it as an avatar, and their decision-making skills.

Yeah, but it's more than that; if the image and similar forms of expression weren't there, you wouldn't have the means to ascertain whether the "ideal" was really being tested to any significant extent.

ABSOLUTELY. The boundaries have to be pushed to make sure we are still on the right side of the issue. Using it as an avatar is idiotic, though.

The Palestinian People of Chicago will be expressing their displeasure with your racial, bigoted, and biased "opinion".

If this doctored photo of Obama is considered free speech (and it is), it's relevance and importance is equal to that of gooble gobble. Neither of which makes any sense.

If you wanna test free speech, just give it a try! Holler out GOOBLE GOBBLE!!
