The Trump administration placed an initial $1.95 billion order for 100 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine with Pfizer and can acquire an additional 500 million doses.

Pfizer and BioNTech announced in a joint statement that they secured “an agreement with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense to meet the U.S. government’s Operation Warp Speed program goal to begin delivering 300 million doses of a vaccine for COVID-19 in 2021.”The BNT162 program is based on BioNTech’s proprietary mRNA technology and supported by Pfizer’s global vaccine development and manufacturing capabilities. The BNT162 vaccine candidates are undergoing clinical studies and aren’t currently approved for distribution anywhere in the world.

“Under the agreement, the U.S. government will receive 100 million doses of BNT162, the COVID-19 vaccine candidate jointly developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, after Pfizer successfully manufactures and obtains approval or emergency use authorization from U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” the statement said. “Americans will receive the vaccine for free consistent with U.S. government’s commitment for free access for COVID-19 vaccines.”

HHS Secretary Alex Azar said, “Expanding Operation Warp Speed’s diverse portfolio by adding a vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech increases the odds that we will have a safe, effective vaccine as soon as the end of this year. Depending on success in clinical trials, today’s agreement will enable the delivery of approximately 100 million doses of this vaccine to the American people.”
 
Probably tell us it won’t work and the testing is full of fake results.
 
We're going to need all the vaccine doses we can get. However, the US government apparently bought 100 million doses of a vaccine that doesn't exist. Not 600 million doses in the article title. Not 300 million doses, which is the government's goal. One hundred million doses of a vaccine that doesn't exist for just shy of $2 billion.

This is the most incompetent administration that has ever tried (and failed) to run a government.

No Covid-19 vaccine in development has proven to work safely yet. The U.S. and other governments are spending billions of dollars to secure potential Covid-19 vaccines and treatments should they prove safe and effective. The race has countries scrambling as they try to secure enough vaccines and the supplies to transport them.

From what I can see in WSJ, it's dependent on the vaccines being approved. Sounds like someone being proactive. If having access to a vaccine is important, would you rather they be proactive and secure commitments to sufficient stock with caveats on it working, or ending up waiting at the end of the line of the other 7 billion people on the planet if we wait until it's a 100% certainty?

If the payment is contingent, then it sounds good to me! Who woulda thunk, after more than half a year, that the Trump administration would decide to take an action related to containing COVID? Gold star day!

Given that it normally takes at least 4 years for a vaccine to be cleared of any possibility of doing harm to people because of clinical trials, no way am I going to take that vaccine until it's been out for awhile, let others be the guinea pigs. The only way to classify a vaccine that soon is to declare it 'experimental ==use at your own risk'.

Another issue I have with clinical trials is that anyone 'less than healthy' are excluded from control groups (they consider it unethical, and I can uderstand that ) which has become known as 'HUB' (healthy user bias). The problem with HUB clinical trials is that results are skewed in favor of the manufacturer, in that, in the real world, doctors and nurses do not exclude anyone from taking a vaccine, or at least many doctors admittedly hand out vaccinations like candy, so even when they pass clinical trials, they still may be dangerous, as in the case of the HPV vax. The trials may show, say, only 1 in 3000 are seriously injured, but in reality, it could be one in 500 or worse, there is no way of knowing, except to check with VAERS, and as the VAERS website so states "results posted are only a fraction". I friend of mine's daughter went into anaphylactic shock, and now has to suffer continued seizures, following an HPV vax.

Bear in mind that there're also experts out there who maintain that we will never be able to create a vaccine against it any more than we can create a vaccine against the common cold.

all the hype about vaccine progress may end up being only hype for quite a lot longer than we would like
better to plan conservatively and then be pleasantly surprised when a vaccine appears (if it does)

Sounds to me like the CEOs of those companies are reliable Trump donors. Perfect timing for the upcoming election. Trump is an idiot. He thinks we can't see through his sh**.

I myself will not take any vaccine for Covid until it's been out in public and reported to be safe. Trump is hoping for the release before November. If that happens, rest assured most people won't be lining up to take it. We already know through polling, that nearly 50% of Americans will not be interested in a vaccine.
 
Typical!! The idea of vaccines for all Americans is essentially single payer in practice. Of course tax dollars pay for it. Santa Claus isn't suddenly going to appear and leave the little shots on the hearth. So WHY are liberals complaining?? After all, it's single payer in practice aka the federal government taking care of the American people. I guess it's because maverick ol TRUMP is doing it, so the liberals can find nothing but fault.
