Former Philadelphia Judge of Elections Convicted of Conspiring to Violate Civil Rights and Bribery

Yes. It only stops one kind of voter fraud: in-person voter impersonation. This happens to be the rarest form of voter fraud, by a very wide margin. Furthermore, voter ID disenfranchises more voters than it stops fraudulent votes. Worse, the GOP has deliberately crafted these laws to disproportionately impact minority voters.

Why would I support that?
So other frauds, like ballot harvesting, is more common? Then it seems in person voting may be the only way to go, given that fraud is so rare. However voter ID is just another safeguard and Republicans can't prevent anyone from voting.

Sure they can. Here's how:

You take your existing voter ID law. You look at what IDs people are using to vote, broken down by race. Then you look at the IDs that black people use more than white people, and remove those IDs from the allowed list. Then you shut down or cut hours for the local government offices that issue those IDs... but only in minority neighborhoods.

You call that a safeguard? Why would you defend this behavior?

Uniform ID's don't require race, religion or skin color. They require other information, including citizenship.

Did you read anything in that paragraph I wrote? What on earth do you think this is a rebuttal to?

The other points, re hours and location,, were not related to ID. Those are easily solved.

They are related to IDs, because they are part of the voter suppression efforts. You have to look at the whole picture.

As for easily solved. Sure. The easiest solution would have been for the racist ****s in the GOP to not do that in the first place. But they did do it, so here we are.

First a secure voting system must be established. That's a national project. Hours, etc. are local problems which can be resolved by local election boards and, if problems and complaints persist, then investigations, firings, and fines can result.

In-person voter ID is such a vanishingly rare occurrence that anyone focusing on that is either a fool or has an agenda to deceive you. Don't forget that.

Is it vanishing because of the 'pandemic' or are people just too lazy or indifferent? How can in person voting deceive? That could more easily be accomplished through other means, no? Like ballot harvesting, for example.

What the **** could you possibly think the pandemic has to do with this? In-person voter impersonation has always been incredibly rare.

I try to be a patient man but am getting tired of having to explain everything to posters who don't keep up or are too lazy to do a bit of search. Get informed and then get involved.. Why some Democrats worry the coronavirus could help Trump win reelection - POLITICO

The discussion of voter ID has been around a lot longer than Coronavirus. Maybe you're the one who needs to keep up.

You likely don't even notice the obvious contradiction in your own post. Whew!

No, you seem to just not understand what I'm writing.

Voter ID has been championed by right wingers for years. In-person voter impersonation is very rare, and always has been. Understand now?

Because it's very rare it should be maintained and further secured. It is not a left/right thing but a responsible citizenship thing. Understand now?

No, because voter ID causes more harm than it does good. Remember the racial bias in its implementation? The disenfranchising legitimate voters?

Is it acceptable to disenfranchise ten thousand legitimate voters to stop one fraudulent vote?

Note: you don't get to wave that off with "they should have IDs." There are people without the proper IDs and you don't get to pretend their votes don't matter.

No, I don't. Where and when was that?

No one will be 'disenfranchised'. How would that occur?

Everyone can get a proper ID. Why not?

No, I don't. Where and when was that?
I just explained this to you. I'm tired of repeating myself. I wasn't making up a hypothetical scenario when I talked about taking IDs off the list when minorities use them more. That was an actual Supreme Court case.

Adding an ID requirement when someone doesn't have that ID prevents them from voting.

Everyone can get a proper ID. Why not?
False. Some elderly people just don't have the documentation needed to get the voting IDs. Plus, there's been concerted efforts to make the IDs harder to get in minority districts.

You don't get to pretend this doesn't matter. You don't get to wave it off with "well that can be fixed." You have to fix it first, before voter ID is remotely acceptable. Get every single eligible voter in the country a proper ID, for free, then we can start to talk about voter ID. Not one second sooner. You don't get to disenfranchise even one single person over this trivial nonsense.

But that would have nothing to do with voter ID today. That's why I had to ask what you're referring to. It's misleading .

Everyone can get ID, without exception. And minority member, like any majority member, can get ID. No one can manage today without ID of some sort.

It's not a complicated issue and could accomplished quite easily.

It's false to claim everyone can get an ID.
It's also irrelevant. Just because it's hypothetically possible to get an ID doesn't justify intentionally making it harder to do so.

It's not a complicated issue and could accomplished quite easily.
Then accomplish it. Get every single American an ID that makes them eligible to vote. No excuses. Just do it. Until then, take your voter suppression and get out.
