Bottom line is... the change in Staunton is stunning almost beyond words,” Graham opined. “A city that voted for Barack Obama, twice, voted for Hillary Clinton, voted for Terry McAuliffe and Ralph Northam, even gave a solid majority to Jennifer Lewis in her 2018 congressional run against Ben Cline, is now controlled by Republicans.”

Not ‘stunning beyond words” It’s... only the beginning. :)

It was a city council election. That has no significance outside the borders of that city. Given that most city council campaigns are non partisan in nature anyway, voters probably decided on their choices based on non partisan issues.

Read the article... or reread the OP. Take note of five names... and the word “stunning “.***

And... since when are local Democrats less insane than Democrats on the state or national stage?

”Stunning*... also used to describe Trump’s ass kicking of Criminal Hillary and her Goebbels Media.

PS> Two R wins in recent Congressional elections. One which made the purr, purr... Katie Hill cry... ROTFLOL.

In fact, it was pretty f--king devastating,” Hill wrote on Twitter. “I went offline & cried for a few days...

Given recent upset elections in favor of Republicans elsewhere, by unexpected margins, there may be something really weird going on here. Among my theories:

1) It's an accident (not likely).
2) It's not a vote for Republicans, its a vote against incumbents during a pandemic crisis. People are getting damn frustrated at the shut down.
3) Voters may hate Trump but not feel strongly about anyone else.
4) Voters are despondent, EXCEPT die hard Trump and Republican voters - the enthusiasm gap.

Whatever the cause(s) its one of the stranger developments I've seen in electoral politics - they may not like Trump but when that polarizing figure is not on the ballot they express their being "fed up" on the ballot.

I'll add this to another strange electoral factoid; a poll says 9 percent of those who voted for Trump say they are voting for Biden (and 4 percent who voted for Hillary say they will vote for Trump).

So 1 out of 10 of previous Trump voters think Biden will promote Trump's signature promises of 2016? Or are they that clueless as to the root differences between the candidates? What idiots. People like this should be culled from the herd, stripped of their votes, and sent to voter re-education camps.
Clearly they don't know what they were or are voting for in either election. Too stupid.

Man Zimmer, it doesn't take much to get your juices flowing does it?

I have a feeling Zimmer that they're just RINO's on most issues

Maybe Democrats are not as popular as they think they are or the media tries to convice everyone they are is another possibility

What a kill joy, he was ready to swear Trump in again until you gave him a dose of reality.

Did you pay attention to the numbers?

Estimated population of the town in 2019 is 24,932. Estimated number of adults (including seniors) 19,778. Of which only 4,320 actually voted in this election.

Only 22% of the eligible voters actually voted.

You do understand that this means that you can't extrapolate this to a national stage due to low voter turnout, right? I mean...a lot of people who are BOTH conservative and liberal didn't bother to vote. And they have a history of low voter turnout.

So...why are getting to excited about this? And more importantly...how much time are you spending scouring local elections across the nation to find these tiny victories to make yourself feel better? I'm curious, honestly, what research methods are you using to find these very, very localized election victories for the GOP?

Side Note: I find it interesting that you chose a song from a band that achieved fame with taking swipes at the GOP and other establishment types.

Again, it was a city council election. If you want to read more into that than it merits then feel free to so. I don't see where it has much significance outside of that local election. I wouldn't be betting that it means the State of Virginia will be in play again for the GOP. I'm not saying it can't--- I actually hope it does swing back to the GOP. I'm just not seeing where a single local city council election is a reliable indication of a trend.

I had the same reaction when I first read the OP. I immediately thought of that city on the Comstock where Mark Twain once worked as a newspaper man, and Hoss, Adam, and Little Joe would ride into town to run errands for "Pa" and end up in a bar room fight.

BTW, did anyone ever explain why the Ponderosa boys when "riding into town" would go all the way to Virginia City instead of into Carson City which was MUCH closer to the ranch?

If you look at the Ponderosa map from the opening credits you will find that although Carson City is closer to a portion of the ranch, Virginia City is considerably closer to the approximate location of the ranch house.

That TV map is all screwy and doesn't add up, especially when you consider shots of the ranch are overlooking lake Tahoe in what in real life would have been at Incline Village on the north east shore of the lake.

To get to Virginia City from the north east shore of lake Tahoe it is a much more difficult journey than heading down the Eastern slope into Carson Valley from that area of Lake Tahoe. Then after you are down in Carson Valley you would then need to travel east and then up into a canyon where Virginia City is right on the slope of Mt Davidson (7800 ft)--- which BTW comes AFTER passing through Silver City and Gold Hill. But for a TV show they always went to Virginia City because that was a better story given the rough and tumble history of Virginia city and the "diggins".

Again... voted Democrat through and through before this election.

Yeah, for a city council.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be very happy to see lots of congressional districts turn red in 2016. But I would need to see more than just a single city council election for me to think that might be a more sweeping trend.
