John Prine, dead of Covid. Rest in Peace.

Oh, no. i had hoped he'd be an angel from Montgomery.

Yeah.

Heavy heart. We actually looked into buying tickets to see him in Dublin this year, they were sold out...

I wish everyone could hear this guy, he was nominated for rock and roll hall of fame, and he won a lifetime achievement grammy earlier this year.

This hurts, I love the guy, seen him 3 times, and just am amazed at his incredible body of work.

Godspeed JP. Lots of tears tonight....:(

John Prine, One of America's Greatest Songwriters, Dead at 73 - Rolling Stone

I know what you are doing in heaven, smoking a nine mile long cigarette!

So sorry to hear this. I knew the deck was way stacked against him for pulling out of this.

Never got to hear him live. Was always hoping I might get the chance but that has just blown away in the wind.

Really hated to see him go.

He beat cancer a few times, including a stage 4. I saw him just about a year and a half ago, great stuff, bad seat! I saw him about 9 years ago, and about 30 years ago with Arlo Guthrie and David Bromberg, what a show, Steve Goodman was supposed to be there, but he died, so young.

Never saw him in person but first discovered him from old Bonnie Raiit CD's/videos and Austin City Limits.

Sabu was sad the whole tour stunk
The airlines lost the elephant's trunk
The roadie got the rabies and the scabies and the flu
They was low on morale but they was high on.

I knew he was in the hospital with it, so it wasn't good.

I was with him since the early days when he played local joints around the neighborhoods. This was a staple:

And I'd be remiss if I didn't toss out something by his often partner in crime from those early days:

So he grew his hair long and threw away his comb
And headed back to Jerusalem to find Mom, Dad and home
But when he got there the cupboard was bare
Except for an old black man with a fishing rod
He said "Whatcha gonna be when you grow up?"
Jesus said "God"
Oh my God, what have I gotten myself into?
I'm a human corkscrew and all my wine is blood
They're gonna kill me Mama. They don't like me Bud.
So Jesus went to Heaven and he went there awful quick
All them people killed him and he wasn't even sick

Dog and I just came back from a long walk. The grandkids are all asleep. I wasn't ready to explain to them why I was weeping. Maybe tomorrow?

John Prine wrote songs that epitomized the American spirit. He was Johnny Cash not taking himself quite so seriously and Bob Dylan not taking life in general so seriously. He didn't get all that heady and just spoke to the people with a little tongue in his cheek and a smile on his face.

Both Prine and Iris DeMent were part of the Kerrville Folk Festival family. I myself am not a "Kerrvert," but my little sister is. Guy Clark...John Prine...sigh.

We were just sitting on the carport, watching the space station go by, and Prine's song "Everything is Cool" came on. What a gift.

Everything is cool
Everything's okay
Why just before last christmas
My baby went away
Across the sea to an island
While the bridges brightly burn
So far away from my land
The valley of the unconcerned
I was walking down the road, man
Just looking at my shoes
When God sent me an angel
Just to chase away my blues
I saw a hundred thousand blackbirds
Just flying thru the sky
And they seemed to form a teardrop
From a black haired angel's eye
That tear fell all around me
And it washed my sins away
Now everything is cool
Everything's okay
Everything is cool…

When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am

My radio friends run a fantastic progressive rock station online, they are doing a tribute to John in a few minutes, 12:00 Pacific time. They always play a lot of Prine, and a lot of Grateful Dead, Zappa, etc. Good ad free music by good people.

Used to go to the festival a lot when we were younger.

We'd go back toward town and camp along the banks of the Guadalupe.

One of my favorite song writer.

"Knowing he was in heaven Before he died"

From one of my favorite albums:

Rest peacefully John.

There are some folks still who travel from all over and have since the first festival. If you haven't been in awhile, Chapel Hill now has a lovely little chapel, and there are two actual toilets, one for men and one for women. No more "honey-dippers"! And it's become a significant nurturing ground for songwriters. Btw, there have been many claims that Rod Kennedy's spirit has made appearances.

I love the Guadalupe and always stop in Boerne to visit the ducks swimming around.
