Sanders Wants New NATO with Russia

Bernie Sanders wants a new NATO -- and he wants Russia to be part of it.

[In a lengthy speech to a jam-packed house at Georgetown University this afternoon, the senator and presidential candidate called for the creation of a new multi-nation organization to fight global extremism.

For once I kind of agree with you.

Y'all are backing the wrong horse, especially after all the things you all have whined about since 2016.

The next Democrat prez will be buddy-buddy with Russia; abuse his EO power; violate The Constitution numerous ways.

I actually thought (If anyone remembers) this was a good approach for Trump, until, well, Russia, Russia, Russia, and all. :)

Tim-

We still need NATO. We downsized back in the 2000's IIRC, but we still have 60K troops in Europe. We used to have like 300K.

Both Trump and now Bernie are a threat to NATO, both are backed by Putin.

Crazy world we live in.

Rocket I hate to break it to you but the article you are currently citing was published in November 2015 and updated in April in 2017.

Unless his position on the issue remains the same, I don’t think this should be considered breaking news

This article is from 2015.

article: "We must create a new organization like NATO to confront the security threats of the 21st century -- an organization that emphasizes cooperation and collaboration to defeat the rise of violent extremism and, importantly, to address the root causes underlying these brutal acts,” he said in the speech.

Does anyone know WTF he is talking about?

ETA: Yeah, old news. I still want to know what he's talking about and what his views are today.

I like Bernie as a person. And, I like the fact that he is honest about who he is. He doesn't hide anything. And, I feel he got ripped off in 2016 (although Hillary probably would have won anyway if everything had actually been fair to Bernie). And, he will be attacked by the establishment again this election, maybe even losing the nomination. But, Bernie is a card carrying socialist and people better wake up to what that actually means. He doesn't hide it but many on the left love some of his ideas so much that they conveniently ignore the whole Bernie, who is right there to see if you just open your eyes.

I like some of what he says, but a lot of it I don't. I don't like that he's an unabashed socialist.

Well, that's what he is. You vote for him and you've got the whole Bernie, not just the part you like.

He sounds a lot like BushII after 9/11. He wanted the first tier nations to work together to fight extremists in third tier failed states. It 'worked' for a hot minute until the Russians started in on the Chechans. While we turn a blind eye to this with our 'allies' in the Middle East we found it unacceptable with Russia.

Putin may not be the best ally in this but the idea still stands.

Russia isn't supporting anyone, they want to undermine our election process. They would like tRump because he is sawing off the branch under him with our allies weakening NATO. They support Sanders because he is the anti-tRump and causes great angst in the uber riche cliques.

Instead of debating who is being helped the most we need to unite and tell Russia to stick it... :peace

Now we know why Putin wants Sanders, don't we?

Soviets tried to join Nato in 1954 | World news | The Guardian
Several times the USSR tried to join NATO, but each time it was refused. One of the main reasons for this refusal is that it would be difficult to demand an increase in the military budget (from which it is so convenient to steal money under the guise of the Russian threat) if the USSR or Russia became a member of NATO. Eisenhower warned about the danger of the military-industrial complex for the United States itself...

#1: The article is woefully outdated.

#2: He refers to the creation of an organization _like_ NATO with a different mission of combating global extremism, not about expanding NATO to include Russia, ending or revising NATO's mission, or otherwise supplanting NATO with a new coalition that includes Russia.
