Democrats just pulled off a huge win, taking control of Virginia's state legislature

Such drama. Virginia went for the dems last 3 presidential elections, its top 3 state offices are dems, and both its senators are dems. The only thing shocking is it took them this long to do it.
Feel free to gerrymander away. It won't make much difference because of the urban/rural divide in the state.

Do you think the GOP did a Paul Ryan repeat of 2018 and left seats intentionally "uncovered"?

"The Virginia Republican Party did not run candidates in 33 races for seats in either the state Senate or the House of Delegates.

According to a review of the state election results from Tuesday, Democrats faced no Republican challenger in 10 out of 40 Senate races or 25 percent.

The Republicans had no candidate on the ballot in 23 out of 100 House of Delegates races or 23 percent. ..."

Virginia has a citizen legislature i.e. the pay is crap. Unless you live in Richmond or the surrounding area, you probably cannot afford to be a state Senator or delegate unless you are a business owner, spouse of someone with some bank, etc. In prior years, the democrats left a lot of seats uncovered which was why it took them this long to get across the finish line in the General Assembly after having success everywhere else in the state.

What I expect that to mean going forward now is:

1) Business owners, doctors and lawyers are not going to be standard garden variety democrats; and

2) Can they hold it? When the dems control things, they tend to start focusing on and redirecting resources toward the DC suburbs. That could cost them in the long run if they go back to the bad habit of neglecting the rest of the state in favor of more roads for Northern Virginia.

Good, they will match up well with the black face racist governor.

LOL - keep clinging to that - it might soothe you as the "blackface racist" Democrats take back control from the GOP who support trump's racist rhetoric.

Psst.... Virginia voted for Obama and Hillary

Things are just the way you want them(wink)

The state houses have been under GOP control for decades. That's a major change - prepare yourself for the blue wave sweeping the battleground states in 2020 as well <wink>.

Such drama :)

The democrats control the majority of the House seats. What exactly is this criminal act that will be cured by redistricting?

Redistricting and voter suppression has been GOP policy since 2010. The shoe is not on the other foot!

That probably explains it. I had also seen the following and couldn't quite understand how 44,000 more repubs voting ended in a "total loss".

The Washington Post is reporting that Republicans won the popular vote in Virginia despite losing the State House majority after the legislative map was redrawn by the courts.

Big talking point with no substance when it comes to Virginia. You cannot do much with gerrymandering. The blue places are bright blue and the red places are dark red. There isn't a lot of wiggleroom to shift borders to change that save maybe a district or two around Richmond where the democrats already own.

I don't give much weight to the blame judicial gerrymandering when it comes to Virginia state races. A lot of these races even contested were blow outs, often for the incumbent. A dem wins with 70% here, a republican wins with 75% there.

The “court case” they one (which you dismissed without actually knowing anything about it), was one of several brought in several states to challenge the GOP district map in each state.

These maps were all drawn as a concerted national effort by the RNC and its consultants to design electoral districts in states so that Democratic votes would be concentrated in small districts, or disspaited in large ones.

Thus, the GOP was able to control the Virginia General Assemply with 51 votes when they LOST by 200,000 votes in the last election.

The courts fixed that.

It seems the courts went a little too far as it appears to be Republicans that has the most votes and is losing control now, looks like they should try again with the redistricting.

The good guys are back in charge. Time to redistrict against the criminal GOP and make it easier for people to vote. I love it when Democratic morals win out over GOP fascism!

You got that right, democrats believe being racist is moral.

Which means Virginia will be turned into a **** state like Illinois, California and New York.

RIP Virginia. :(

Now now, dont be bitter! The electorate of VA have decided.

Well, "less bad" guys, at any rate.

Just the opposite. We can't stand trump's racist rhetoric and his supporters who defend it. You're just like trump - "I'm not the racist, you're the racist". Just like "I'm not the puppet you're the puppet". It would be funny if it wasn't so pathetically pedantic.

Virginia has become a blue state. The good guys didn't win the foreigners in the adjacent counties to Washington DC have taken over.
Fairfax County that has more than double the population of any other county in the state, 600,000 more than any other county. In Fairfax
County 30% of the inhabitants are foreign born that's amazing & that's what has happened. Fairfax has among it's residents 20% Asian
& 17% Hispanic, The number of Fairfax students who speak a foreign language at home surpasses 50 percent, More than 160 foreign
languages are spoken in Fairfax County schools, the most prevalent being Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic and Mandarin Chinese.
