A group of men carrying a white nationalist flag were caught on camera Saturday attempting to film a video in front of the Emmett Till memorial in Sumner, Mississippi.

Patrick Weems, executive director of the Emmett Till Memorial Commission, told NBC News that the group was captured on camera by a new surveillance system that was updated when the bulletproof memorial was dedicated on 19 October.

"This is the first incident we've seen of what appears to be white nationalists making a propaganda video," Mr Weems said.

One man can be heard in the video identifying the sign as a monument representing the "civil rights movement for blacks".

This story is one of the most disturbing story about racism that I've read in a long time. The story about Emmett Tills is a story that has stuck with my for most of my life and possibly because the first time I heard this story I was a very young girl and couldn't understand why a 14 year old boy from Chicago was brutally murdered in Mississippi.

This is just one of the marker signs that's been shot at, the other marker had to be shielded from gunshot with bulletproof material. These are mentally sick people in Mississippi.

You know what? We're reaching the point in this country that people on both sides are going to have to stand up and say 'this is wrong!' and if they don't, this country is in deep trouble.

Lots of people in the south never really got over losing the Civil War and slavery.

Add to that the fact that minorities actually demanded their rights as Americans—something which enraged the folks down there and started their hysterical obsession with “communism”—-and its no surprise that there are still plenty of thugs running around

Not condoning their racism, but if this is on public property, they do have as much right to be there as anybody else. If not, put up a no trespassing sign and start arresting them.

Emmett Tills' brutal murder was one of the driving forces behind the Civil Rights movement. But the sheer hatred and brutality of the killing of this 14 year old boy from Chicago was unheard of, even in those times. Emmitt Till's mother insisted that her son's body be viewed and not have a closed casket She wanted to show the world what racism caused white men to do to her son.

I don't believe that ANYONE has a right to shoot up a memorial sign OR to make racist white supremacist videos in front of it. That's a desecration of a memorial site. I hope every one of those yeehaws that were caught on video got arrested for it.

Racial prejudice has nothing to do with communism. Racism and biggotry is not an excuse for people with fantasies and fears of communism to project the excuse for that their fear of communism on anything to do with racism.

But that was the excuse used to justify opposition to civil rights— to shriek about how it was a “communist plot”. That line of thinking—- where anything they oppose is “communism”— has never really died down. You can see it pretty clearly in many of our posters from south of the Mason-Dixon Line today.

Mississippi has the most egregious Jim Crow election laws in the land.

I can also almost guarantee that if this thread doesn’t die down someone will amble along and start whining about how bigoted everyone is against southerners.

Is it your opinion that all public property is fair game then and anyone has a right to willingly be destructive on that public property? Do you understand how backasswards that statement is. You're actually making the argument that because that memorial plaque is on public property that it's okay for rednecks to go shooting it up with guns. What other kind of public property is it okay to shoot bullet holes in, someone's car parked at the curb in a public street maybe, or maybe it's okay to pour a gallon of red paint on a monument to General Beauregard Whatchamacalit, hero of the Confederacy? Maybe it's okay to defile that statue since it's placed in a public park.
