U.N. Elects Venezuela to Human Rights Council – Reason.com

The United Nations' Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights Venezuela released a blistering report on Venezuela in July. It found that President Nicolas Maduro's government engaged in widespread human rights abuses, including the torture and murder of political opponents and average citizens.

Yesterday, Venezuela was also elected to the United Nations' Human Rights Council, an intergovernmental body charged with "strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights."

Who exactly is voting FOR Venezuela for such a position and why? The ballot is secret and there was only one other country in the running, Costa Rica.

Beyond the US getting out of the UN, whats the solution here? Maybe some of the better states should resign, like the UK, Spain, Japan? The council seems to be full of human rights violators.

Note: the US resigned its membership in 2018.

What a ****ing joke.

Wasn't it crap like this that disbanded the last version of the UN Human Rights Council?

The definition of insanity......

Why are you offended that Venezuela was elected?

The High Commissioner of Human Rights will be rewarding China shortly for being so compassionate.
What a joke the UN has become, right next to the Nobel committee.

You're right, and it's a shame that the UN has become such a joke. Nikki Haley made it even a bigger joke.

I guess that's why the US doesn't give a GGD about international agreements, even before Trump took the stage.

Why are you offended that Venezuela was elected?

Because the purpose of the Human Rights council is "the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe." and the Venezuela authorities do the opposite.

And the UN has gone out of its way to show how worthless they have become.

Do you write government propaganda for a living?

It is the US government that kills innocents with weekly or daily drone attacks. It is that same government that institutionalized rendition and torture. We bomb hospitals when we're in the mood.

And the sanctions ordered by the US have punished the peasants in Venezuela over many years.

Get real.

So its ok when we do it, or not ok when Venezuela does it?

The UN has been a joke for a long time. It is pretty much a worthless entity.

American liberals will be rejoicing.

The saddest part of your post is that you actually believe this. Propaganda works, I tell ya.

Violate human rights. In response to my pointing out Venezeulas actions, you said the US is bad. So should I take your silence on Venezuela to be that you think its ok? Or your condemnation of US actions as agreement that Venezuela is bad?

Thank you for clarifying.

Some countries and cultures seem to like to be ruled by dictators, especially those in the muslim Mideast. Not so sure about Venezuela and South America in that regard, but under Chavez, Maduro and Morales in Bolivia, the people have actually done fairly well.

So I would be interested in hearing from you just what violations of human rights have come under Maduro? I know that's what our western media want us to think, but I would like to know how the government has actually violated human rights there? Yes, the country is piss poor for the most part, especially after all the wealthy class took their money and got out while they could, many fleeing to here in Florida.

Venezuela has been under US sanctions since the time of Bush II, and it's the people who suffer under US sanctions, not so much the government.

Maybe you can offer a conscientious defense of the US sanctions that hurt the citizens? Like the sanctions we imposed in Iraq which really just denied food and medicine to the people?

Considering the denial of food and medicine to the people themselves, one might argue that the sanctions are a human rights violation.

The US is irrelevant to the topic. However, under Maduro,

The Venezuelan government has jailed political opponents and disqualified them from running for office.
Security force personnel shot demonstrators at point-blank range with riot-control munitions, brutally beat people who offered no resistance, and staged violent raids on apartment buildings.
Security forces have committed serious abuses against detainees that in some cases amount to torture—including severe beatings, electric shocks, asphyxiation, and sexual abuse.
Police and members of the Bolivarian National Guard carried out raids that led to widespread allegations of such abuses as extrajudicial killings, mass arbitrary detentions, maltreatment of detainees, forced evictions, destruction of homes, and arbitrary deportations
the judiciary has ceased to function as an independent branch of government.
In 2017, President Maduro convened a “Constituent Assembly” by presidential decree, despite a constitutional requirement that a public referendum be held before any effort to rewrite the Constitution.
the government has expanded and abused its power to regulate media and has worked aggressively to reduce the number of dissenting media outlets
In 2010, the Supreme Court ruled that individuals or organizations receiving foreign funding can be prosecuted for treason.
A government program that distributes food and basic goods at government-capped prices has been credibly accused of discriminating against government critics.
etc

Hints and allegations and things left unsaid, is what you offer.

How convenient of you to declare the US irrelevant.

In your imaginary world, a country that imposes sanctions, threatens military intervention and otherwise foments violence and revolution is irrelevant. You sound like Rachel Maddow talking.
