1. I always love watching the gentle humor at the Al Smith dinners (shown on C-SPAN).
2. I am sorry that President Trump does not attend those dinners or the Washington correspondents' dinners.
3. Although I would be honored to vote for President Trump again, I acknowledge that he has no sense of humor and is very thin-skinned.
4. I believe, however, that General Mattis was wrong to (even humorously) poke fun at the President because (a) he was the Defense Secretary and owed that position to the person who appointed him and (b) even retired military should not be ridiculing the Commander-in-Chief.
5. I would not be surprised if General Mattis one day runs for president. Maybe that was why he spoke out.
I guess my opinion on that is what goes around comes around. Trump didn't show any respect for Mattis, or his service, and fired him in a way intended to be insulting and degrading to Mattis. Since then he's continued with a pattern of disrespecting Mattis and everyone else who doesn't toe the Trump line.
It might be nice to take the higher ground, but a President who doesn't respect others, disparages and insults them, isn't owed the respect he routinely fails to extend to others.
