DOJ: Church leaders held homeless against will in San Diego and other cities

Church leaders in San Diego, El Centro, and Brownsville, Texas were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of subjecting homeless people to forced labor, according to U.S. Department of Justice officials.

U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California Robert Brewer said those charged coerced the victims to give up their welfare benefits and forced them to panhandle up to 54 hours a week.

Twelve people said to be leaders of Imperial Valley Ministries (IVM) are charged with conspiracy, forced labor, document servitude, and benefits fraud, said Brewer.

“The indictment alleges an appalling abuse of power by church officials who preyed on vulnerable homeless people with promises of a warm bed and meals,” said Brewer. “These victims were held captive, stripped of their humble financial means, their identification, their freedom, and their dignity.”

IVM is headquartered in El Centro and operates about 30 churches in the U.S. and Mexico including locations in Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Santa Ana, and San Jose. The church’s stated purpose is to “restore” drug addicts at faith-based rehab homes, the Department of Justice said in a news release.

Just when you think you've heard it all...Clergy partaking in modern day slavery.

IVM leaders allegedly “inducted many to participate with offers of free food and shelter with the false promise that victims would be provided with resources to eventually return home,” according to the DOJ.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If I wanted to commit unspeakable cruelties against unsuspecting people & get away with it, I can't think of a better cover than that of a church leader, save perhaps for a police officer. Never trust a church or law man until you know them personally.

and yet, it doesn't really surprise us any longer.

You're just now concerned about clergy crimes and Evangelical hypocrisy?

Can you say Catholic priests? How about Jerry Falwell Jr?

I think it's important for everyone to note this is not in Florida.

Finally one more good thing about Florida!

Unfortunately, Maga-hat-man never amounted to much and Florida-man is once again in peril of becoming the number one meme. Trying to keep that at bay.

And it lends itself to a larger point.

Never heard of Imperial Valley Ministries. There's a lot of things that have been done throughout history in the name of Jesus that were done by evil people. Glad the DOJ busted them.

Aren't you a Trump supporter? What happened to Maga hat man? He was kicking so much ass and then nothing for months. Help Florida out.

They should have a game show where people get high and drunk and other people film their deranged adventures.

Wait....that's Florida.

Who wants to film in a flyover?

Lot of things done in the name of humanism that were done by evil people too.

Of course, this is just you getting your kicks by attacking Christians - the progressive fascist thing to do. And, of course, neither "Jesus" nor "Christian" is mentioned in the linked story.

Still again, just today, as I have pointed out many times, Christians need only read messages by many to most progressive Democrats on this forum to understand why every Christian - over 70% of voters - should vote straight Republican for every office in every election.

I mean why are even going to bother with a trial? Anyone arrested is guilty, everyone knows that. Or at least nearly every progressive Democrat - like those on this thread - demanding the USA becomes a full police state knows that.

You won't find one thread started by a Democrat on this forum ranting about Coyotes raping and murdering illegal immigrants, nor one started about how most female illegal immigrants are raped nor of the over 1/4th of children claimed to be the children of illegal immigrants aren't their children but instead were kidnapped.

What you will find is one or more threads by Democrats for which immediately the topic is derailed to attacking Christians. Never Muslims. Never atheists. Only Christians and Jews.

WTF!!!????

Some people do everything they can to ruin my faith in humanity.

Turns up every now and then, that or some kind of church school environment where all kinds of despicable things are going on.
All organized religious "ministries" are centers of absolute authority and that is always a magnet for a certain type of personality.

It is the nature of the institution, which is why I avoid all or nearly all of them like the plague.
Every once in a while I am pleasantly surprised when I encounter groups which are not affected or infected.
Fewer and further between, but they're out there...

I just think there's no interest in spotlighting the ones who do good things in their communities.

Research shows this so called Church has many oddities. It appears to be much more into exploiting illegal aliens than any religious endeavor. I suspect the so called Church is nothing but a front for a scam. It is a shame that this type of conduct is allowed to occur in the United States. However, California is known for coddling to oddball religions.

The thread isn't personally about me but just in case you really are interested, as a Roman Catholic, I've done a great deal of complaining about priest pedophilia.
