Indian migrant girl, 6, died in Arizona desert as mother sought water

(Reuters) - A six-year-old girl from India died of heat stroke in an Arizona desert after her mother left her with other migrants to go in search of water, a medical examiner and U.S. Border Patrol said on Friday.

The girl, Gurupreet Kaur, soon to celebrate her seventh birthday, was found by U.S. Border Patrol west of Lukeville, Arizona on Wednesday, when temperatures reached a high of 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42 Celsius), U.S. Border Patrol and the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner (PCOME) said.

I guess America is responsible for this lady dragging her 6 year old through a 108 degree desert. At least a wall would help detour these people from even making these dangerous trips and hopefully direct them to legal immigration. I dont see a mother with a 6 year old dragging a 20 foot ladder through the desert.

From India?

We lose a few dozen that way every year. People quite often underestimate how much water they need when it's 110° and they're wandering through the desert.

It appears so. I guess alot of people try to migrate to Mexico and from there to US and from there Canada.

Isn’t it rather expensive to travel from India to Mexico?

Is there a war in India?

Regardless of what one thinks about the immigration matter, no one (except violent criminals, of course) should have to die like that.

1. I understand that it is illegal for Americans to offer food and water to people trying to illegally cross into the United States. Could that law be changed?

2. Would it be possible to have rest stations (with water, of course) stationed in the desert? Signs in various languages would direct people to those stations.

3. Would it be possible to request Mexico to have planes fly daily over the desert areas to see whether anyone is in distress? (I am sure that there are many American activists who would gladly contribute to pay for such a service.)

No. But they are responsible for this:
US border patrol routinely sabotages water left for migrants, report says | US news | The Guardian
And this:
4 found guilty of leaving water, food for migrants in Arizona desert

From India?

It's a Punjabi name. They're probably Sikhs. Odd though, many Sikh women and girls have Kaur as a middle name, it means Queen. Like the men are usually given Singh as a middle name, meaning lion.

A similar thing happens at the northern border. People have crossed illegally into Canada with severe freezing injuries that cost them fingers and toes.

It’s the fault of the US. I wish I knew how it turned out. I’ll look for it.

1 & 2. Why? The more humane approach would be to have a physical or virtual barrier, and force people to come through legal crossings where they can be given water, food, shelter, and medical assistance as needed.

3. Why would Mexico fly planes over the Arizona desert?

Hundred's of people die every year trying to cross illegally into the United States!

Remains of 127 dead migrants recovered in southern Arizona in 2018

On the weekend before Christmas, a group of volunteers set out to search for the remains of dead migrants on the Barry Goldwater Air Force Range, a remote desert area in southwestern Arizona where military jets from bases in Arizona conduct live bombing exercises.

The volunteers from the non-profit group Aguilas del Desierto recovered the skeletal remains of eight migrants in two days.

The San Diego-based group posted pictures of some of the remains it recovered near Ajo on its Facebook page, including a skull, a jaw and a set of leg bones, bleached white by the sun.

The photos were reminders that high numbers of migrants continue to die annually in southern Arizona after crossing the border illegally, as increased border security over the years has pushed some migrants to take more treacherous treks to avoid being caught by the Border Patrol.

3. Why would Mexico fly planes over the Arizona desert?

Thank you for the clarification.

I thought that the child had died in Mexican territory.

In that case, then, our country should monitor the desert areas for people in distress.

Have a nice new week!

Thank you for your information.

1. I personally do NOT think that such families have a case.

a. If they were to win their case, this would open up the United States to all kinds of suits.

2. I did read in this thread that some border agents are destroying water supplies left for border crossers. If this is an accurate account, such behavior is inhumane, and this policy should be reversed. This is, in my opinion, a genuine complaint that activists should take up with the federal government.

They do this. In fact, both the mother and daughter were found by border patrol searching the area.

Activists are complaining about the destruction of water supplies.

The thing is, they want to discourage ANYONE from coming through this area, because it is so dangerous. This case is a perfect point. It's a big desert. The nearest proposed site was 12 hours away and separated by a mountain range. It would have not helped anyone in this group. The last thing you want is to enable the smugglers who point people across the border with a map to water that may or may not be there.

I think banks should have stations with bags, masks and guns for anyone who wants to hold them up.

Otherwise, they're violating the civil rights of would-be robbers.

I wonder why she didn't cross at a place where there was a wall because walls don't work.

Or... Cross legally.

Mothers have lifted cars off of their children.

Don't underestimate maternal instinct.

People in boats die of dehydration too.

You do know you can't drink seawater, right?

LOL. Oh wow. You're really stretching there. Which ocean is it that borders Arizona again? Or was it the Gulf of Mexico? Is that really your best argument?

Uhhhh, you mentioned a wall.

I mentioned one of the things people will do if there IS a wall.

Sorry you can't think outside of your talking points .

You should be mad at the people giving you ****ty talking points instead of at me.

:lamo I'm still laughing. Thanks.
