Ilhan Omar controversy with 9/11 cover

The full context is perhaps not as titillating as when the statement is taken out of context.:

“Here’s the truth. For far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen and, frankly, I’m tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it. CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties. So you can’t just say that today someone is looking at me strange and that I am trying to make myself look pleasant. You have to say that this person is looking at me strange, I am not comfortable with it, and I am going to talk to them and ask them why. Because that is the right you have.”

Sorry, but even in context her words were horribly cavalier about what was probably the worst day in millions of people's lives, and the worst terrorist attack on American soil in history. I'm sure as hell not going to defend her. In fact, I wish she'd STFU and do the damned job she was elected to do.

Omar ought to resign.

No. She's a baby congresswoman with a big mouth and a media salivating for their next headline. She needs to learn how to conduct herself in public in her new role, and for her sake I hope she's a quick learner... although at present it doesn't appear so.

I just don't get from the full context that she was diminishing the significance of the 9/11 attack. What I get from her full statement is that because some Muslims carried out the 9/11 attack, Muslims as a whole have been stigmatized. What Omar may be feeling is some frustration due to the fact that White Supremacists carry out the overwhelming majority of domestic terrorist attacks in America, yet this does not somehow stigmatize American caucasians.

Right wing morons will cry about Candace Owens being taken out of context and also buy this ****. Because they're morons.

A congresswoman should understand the significants of what happened on 911 and choose her words wisely. The fact that she is continuously in the news regarding horrifics statements she makes tells me her time is almost up in congress. She is terrible for the Democrats and she is worse for this country! Her hatred for this country and of course Israel is obvious....unless you're a moron.

Well then why didn't she just say "some Muslims"?

What kind of idiot would think evening things out in something this disgusting and likely something that will stir violence towards Ilhan is of concern to leftists? *** off

Cardinal you know as well as I do facts and context mean nothing to those on the right who support trump. The front page of the post says it all for them. It allows their hatred to flow freely.

But nothing to see from the trump administration when all I hear are ducks quacking. Go home, your daddy is calling you.

SHHHHH!!! Don't take away the manufactured outrage toy!!!!

Right wing morons will cry about Candace Owens being taken out of context and also buy this ****. Because they're morons.

Ever notice that libs seem to only have name calling and put-downs to offer?

The Post stirred up some controversy with this cover page:

I was in response to Ilhan Omar's about 911 in which she is accused of quipping "some people did something". She made the comment speaking at fundraiser for CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Her actual comment was, in regards to CAIR,: “was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something, and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.” She then tried to walk it back and said later she: "misspoke and “meant to refer to the fact that the organization had doubled in size after the Sept. 11 attacks." But, there is no way that the original comment could have ever been taken for that, the walk back does not fit.

However the lefties should not be too upset with the Post, towards the end of the article they manage to get a negative in towards Trump to equal things out. First about an "and avowed Trump supporter" allegedly threatening to kill her and then Trump himself with "Omar, a Muslim Somali-American, has become a popular target for Trump and his supporters for her outspoken views on U.S.-Israeli relations. In February, she was forced to apologize after suggesting that U.S. policy toward Israel is linked to financial support from American Jews."

Rep. Ilhan Omar ripped for 9/11 comments on New York Post cover

It's dumb to expect a Somalian Muslim to identify with Islam's American victims.

It's dumb to expect a Somalian Muslim to identify with Islam's American victims.

Just as its dumb to expect a Somali Muslim to have anything other than bad words to say about Jews.

The Founding Fathers intended for Congress to be a forum for middle eastern tribes to insult each other.

Few know this.

And she says it while hanging out with a terrorist-supporting organization.
But the Dems will continue to stand by her and use the race card if necessary to defend her.

Good gawd, can you imagine a Conservative referring to Chirstchurch as "some guy did something"?

That changes nothing, not a damn thing at all.

You have to actually read the 121 words surrounding the four words plucked out of context.

I cant believe anyone would play apologist for her blase minimalization, incredible...I shake my head in disbelief.

I do not see why anyone who is not a Muslim cares about the Palestinians. If the Muslims really cared they would invite the Palestinians to their countries.

I do not think Muslims care about the Palestinians any more than I do. They are just looking for excuses to hate Israel. They hate Israel because with no oil wealth the Israelis do everything better than they do.

I am confident that very few people in the West who take the side of the Palestinians against Israel would rather live in a Muslim country than Israel.

Never really thought I'd see someone identifying as 'slightly liberal' defend a country that's absorbing a neighbor that it was carved out of, or talk in general terms about the people of a nation. When I critisize Isreal, I specifically critisize the actions of the government, and you won't catch me saying things like, 'Isrealis don't care about anything but . .' because that would be stupid, and guarenteed to be the start of an inaccurate statement.

Also, whether not people on any side of this debate would rather live in one area, rather than the other, is completely irrelevant. We don't get to justify the expansion of a nation's borders simply on the basis of it being better for the people living there. That mentality is lent it'self to rhetoric that's gotten us as a people to support regime change. It wasn't that long ago that a previous administration shifted to emphasizing the tyranny of Saddam Hussein in order to maintain support of an unnecessary and ultimately catastrophic war once the narrative of WMDs had stopped being a convince enough of a catalyst.

Here's a thought experiment: does the fact that hostilities arose on both sides in conflicts between early American settlers and the indigenous people justify the near-eradication and loss of sovereignty to those indigenous peoples? When thinking about European expansion in general, do you [generally speaking] applaud the infrastructure imperialistic nations built in foreign lands and the state of the today's world being built on the foundation of colonialism, or do you decry it as an injustice committed by self-serving, greedy men with power that oppressed other peoples and plundered their resources?

My opinions are extreme. Some are on the extreme left. Some are on the extreme right. If you average them out I end up a little to the left of center. I hate criminals and I want them to suffer. I do not think anyone should be allowed to move to the United States unless their presence here will clearly benefit most American citizens. In other words I am in favor of very little immigration. I am opposed to Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF).

On the other hand, my left hand, I am in favor of taxing the bejabbers out of rich people and corporations. I am in favor of strong labor unions, a high minimum wage, and high unemployment compensation. My favorite president is Franklin Roosevelt. I want a government that advances my interests, and the interests of the people I identify with and care about. I do not want a government that advances the interests of rich people. I do not want a government that advances the interests of the underclass. I define the underclass as the unemployable class of welfare recipients who often supplement their welfare checks with the gains from criminal activity.

My feelings about American Indians are ambivalent. They were deprived of their land. I am fascinated by their cultures. Nevertheless, I dislike the fact that they routinely tortured male prisoners of war to death. I prefer civilization to barbarism. I think European rule of sub Saharan Africa ended centuries to early.

I do not see the existence of Israel as an example of western imperialism. I see the existence of Israel as God's Chosen People returning to the land God gave them. I see the Palestinians as squatters without significance. The Arabs never recovered from the Mongol conquests of the thirteenth century. History passed them by. It will not come back. They will never be great again. When we develop alternatives to petroleum they will be in dire straits. I loved the Gulf War. I thought Iraq was a threat to Israel, so I wanted Iraq to be devastated.

If you keep all of that in mind you will not be surprised by the opinions I express here. :)

Just because some people did something doesnt mean you should stigmatize all American caucasians Cardinal.

Then you agree with Omar.

Absolutely. And I plan on using that saying all the time

It sounds to me like you plan on repeating it for the purpose of making a point that Omar is falsely portrayed as making in the OP.

Lol. She wasnt falsely portrayed at all. Did you defend Candace Owens the way you are defending Omar?

The enormous irony of this statement considering who our president is...

Yeah, Omar was falsely portrayed. You have to pluck four words out of a statement of 125 words to make her sound like she was diminishing the significance of 911. That’s just childish.
