Black NAHL player subjected to racial taunts during game in Quebec

The hockey community is rallying around a black player who was subjected to racial taunts during a weekend game in Canada.
The incident occurred Saturday in Quebec's North American Hockey League game in Saint-Jerome after Jonathan Diaby of the Jonquiere Marquis was sent to the penalty box.
A fan climbed up onto the glass and began making monkey gestures and showing Diaby a picture of a monkey on his phone.
"People were yelling, 'You baboon,' and telling my dad to go back home, like we don't belong here," Diaby, 24, told CTV in Montreal.
Diaby's father and girlfriend were also harassed in the stands, the station reported.
"Security did nothing," Diaby said. "They asked my family to just leave. They asked them to move and change places, so they could have a quiet game."
The league issued an apology to Diaby and his family.

Racism? In Canada? I thought they were supposed to be better than the US...
 
Now that is too much of being a bully, and what's funny is the fact that the security did nothing.

hehe...thanks for having our back, but of course we have racists in Canada. :) We are way whiter than America (statistically speaking, that's not a snow pun), and we definitely have our fair share of assholes. It varies province by province and area by area, but we definitely have our issues. Quebec isn't the most tolerant place, but it's uniquely intolerant - it doesn't stop at race, but goes on to just about anyone that's not "them". There parts of Quebec where I, as a white English speaker, would be completely unwelcome.

However it is getting worse...conservative populism and fear mongering kicked into high gear during the 2015 election, and it hasn't really let up, so all the racists have come out of the woodwork up here, as well.

There are parts of Quebec that are frozen tundra. I'm betting most of it is not all year round and most Canadians, even those from Quebec are very nice people. Some Quebecians are assholes just as some people are in every population.[/QUOTE]

No, pretty much **** Quebec.... :lol: Just playing, of course - I certainly wouldn't generalize all folks from Quebec based on this, but Quebec and Alberta seem to be leaders in this kind of behavior. But it's everywhere, I hear stuff every day, though usually nowhere near as blatant as this.

I'm a firm believer in the notion that every single demographic has it's own share of angels and assholes. Generalizing rarely works, and usually distorts reality. I prefer to look at things on a case by case basis.

Wow. Hard to believe that racist buffoons of the 21st century are still taken aback by black athletes on a hockey team. My dad used to take me to WHL games back in the 60’s and 70’s, and my favorite player was always Willie O’Ree. Never thought nothing of it, then or now.

Could you imagine if the "Bo Knows" commercial was to be released today? Wayne Gretzky saying "No" to the idea of Bo, a black guy, playing hockey clearly shows the racism of Canadians. They are very Nationalistic about their sport.

It's a great place if you don't mind waiting two years for a medical procedure. Probably not a great place for black people apparently.
