ICE Set Up A Fake College To Bust Immigrants For Trying To Legally Stay In The Country While They Ea

The point often brought p by Trump is that he's just trying to make sure that immigrants come here legally. However, it seems like the latest sting operation conducted by ICE has snared up immigrants for trying to enroll in a fake college (set up by ICE to catch illegal immigrants). Unfortunately, it seems that most of the enrollees were here legally and were enrolling to renew their student visas.

These people were trying to follow the law by enrolling in a university to renew their visas. But they ended up getting caught in a sting operation obviously meant for ILLEGAL immigrants. And on top of that, each of them paid $100 and none of them were reimbursed. Thankfully, of the 148 students who got arrested, only 8 of them are actually facing charges. Still, it's a major breach of trust to honest immigrants.

How low will you go to post from an unheard of site called Techdirt, that leaves out the relevant facts to make a bogus case?

Fake university in Michigan set up by ICE to nab foreign students: report | Fox News

The students enrolled to obtain jobs under a student visa program called Curricular Practical Training, according to the paper. An indictment unsealed Wednesday said the defendants helped 600 undocumented immigrants to enroll in the fake university in exchange for cash, kickbacks and tuition credits.

“We are all aware that international students can be a valuable asset to our country, but as this case shows, the well-intended international student visa program can also be exploited and abused,” Schneider said in a statement.

"The fake university had been set up in 2015 as part of an elaborate sting operation"

From WaPo. No Trump fingerprints there.:

Just a joke cause Trump likes to scam hopeful students out of their money.

That's a blog - a biased opinion piece - not an article.

It does shed a little light though... the recruiters are facing conspiracy charges. They were probably the key targets of this scam - and the ones with charges remaining against them. You could call this sting heartless or slimy, but it sounds like they took some real criminals off the street that were really taking advantage of people.

It is an opinion piece, based on facts.

This is the main takeaway I got from the piece:
The sad thing is these people probably would have gone to a regular college and paid a little more if they didn’t see Farmington first.

Is it fair that they were lured by a government lie?

They fell for a fake school and are now are charged with real crimes with real consequences.

It’s some nasty business when ICE has to create criminals to catch.

There was some hue and cry late last year when some progressive Democrats called for the abolition of ICE. And of course, there was backlash from those who charged Dems with being weak on border security.

But the “abolition” of ICE was merely a call for ICE to refocus on its purpose and how it did its job, ethically, for starters.

If you want to cheer on these tactics, go for it.

My standards are higher.

You're defending the government setting up fake colleges to primarily waste Americans and legal immigrants time in the hopes they might catch a few illegals? What the hell is the matter with you?

It's called enforcing the law and I'm all for it.

Government agencies setup sting operations all the time to catch illegal activity.
they setup drug stings
sexual predator stings
along with a whole slew of other things.

so please stop acting like this is OMG outragous.

Can you quantify the part in bold?

I have many conservative friends...even a few Trumpsters. In general, I have no issue with conservatives. The world is a busy place, and politics is just a part of it.

The extremes on both sides are a nuisance....and at times, dangerous....

Climate change deniers, and Anti-vaxxers need to go the way of the dinosaur.

no one deny's climate change. climate change is supposed to happen.
you once again prove that people that spout that stuff have no clue what the argument actually is.

It's an opinion piece, based on incomplete facts with an obvious bias.

It's not a perfect solution, but one that ICE used to catch (1) people cheating the system, (2) brokers who take advantage of people, and (3) send a message that they're watching to discourage the use of 'real' fake universities.

Now, would some of the students have attended real college if they hadn't been presented with a fake one which didn't require attendance? Possibly. But they didn't, and it clearly shows that their goal wasn't to get an education, but to circumvent the system. Were there lies involved? Sure. We're getting conflicting reports on this based on the people charged - and I'm curious to hear the real story.

In a way, it's like a police prostitution sting using police officers dressed up as ladies of the night. The 'victims' might have thought they were asking the young lady out on a date, and some could have just been offering a damsel in distress a ride home. But it's a bit harder to argue they didn't know what was going on once money and services changed hands.

you hit the nail on the head right here.

It's called enforcing the law and I'm all for it.

So was the IRS investigating right wing groups pretending to be tax-exempt organizations.

So was the IRS investigating right wing groups pretending to be tax-exempt organizations.

That's unrelated to this thread - really a bizarre thing to throw in. Obviously, based on it's own OIG investigation, the IRS was not enforcing the law in that situation.

So was the IRS investigating right wing groups pretending to be tax-exempt organizations.

The IRS wasn't investigating those groups. It was singling out Conservative groups for harassment and stalling their applications, for partisan political reasons.

Enforcement of all kinds set up all kinds of deception to catch criminals all the time. In fact an officer can lie to you to get information from you that you would not probably turn over. This is routine.

What are you complaining about, Christ you've seen first hand how Mueller operates and you're all OK with his schemes and lies to get a person to roll over, who you defend his practices.

And you have no actual numbers to support a "few illegals" do your homework.

I would object to money being collected from law abiding citizens and not having that money returned immediately upon telling these people it is not a real college.

First the immigrants are not citizen. Second ICE has to determine if the immigrant is legal or not. Once the person is determined to be here legally on a visa, sure they then should return any possession that were taken.

If a legal abiding citizen comes to the college he/she would have indemnification, the legal immigrants would have their visa and passport. An illegal would have nothing and would be held until he/she was verified as an illegal or not.

Sounds like ICE, and America, win.

Indeed.
I should have been more specific.

What I see, is more bias in your post, than in the article you are disputing.

I can also admit I have my own bias, as well.

There is a huuuuge problem in the country with rapists and murderers and drug dealers (and a few very fine people) enrolling in college trying to earn their degrees. And the Trump team is just trying to address this issue.

You are correct regarding asylum seekers. What I was also referring to was this:

You referred that as a false premise. And the data indicates the majority of those here illegally, and are not seeking asylum, are simply looking for work, for the reasons I stated above.

It is also true that the number of illegal crossings are significantly lower today, and has been trending downward for the last 2 decades.

Is the US in an 'illegal' immigration crisis? Border patrol data suggests otherwise | US news | The Guardian

Skepticism is a healthy attribute.

What evidence supports your skepticism?

I do not doubt that there are actually people who came here for good reasons. But when they still choose to willfully break the law, I can only have very little sympathy to spare for them. We are a nation of laws after all ad all of it gets spelled out rather plainly.

Evidence for my skepticism?

First would be that even the long term predictions of both climate change and the impact of it are still impossible for us to do. Second would be that even considering our last 60 years of carbon emissions. We still have no hard evidence of just how much we're responsible for and just how much carbon emissions alone are the cause of. Seeing as the planet is host to an already incredible amount of factors to contribute to the climate as is.

I would rather stand with the scientist who are trying to find a way to narrow down how climate change works, or is affected by us and just how to combat it in the future.

I'm not going to say that the climate isn't changing. Its just that we're not the only factor in all of this.

Technically this is an opinion piece, not a news article. But yes, you should be able to search for other articles covering it. There are quite a few.

Given how close together opinion pieces and actual articles have been coming to over the last two years. The generalization could be rather hazardous to some degree.

This is a discussion forum, which is far different than a 'news' source. We're supposed to give opinions and thoughts here. BUT, I think you are viewing it through your own lenses.

Again, this wasn't about people enrolling in college to earn a degree. This is about people enrolling in a fake college to cheat the system, brokers who were willing to take advantage of them, an making it harder for 'real' fake colleges to operate.

It's not that news articles and opinion pieces have been coming closer together... it's that more 'news sources' are presenting opinion pieces in place of news stories. It's OK to present an opinion piece, but the readers (us) need to be able to recognize the difference. and separate the facts from the opinions. Many aren't able to separate the two, and tend to view an obviously biased blog or opinion piece as gospel. This is a great example.

yep because human have little impact on global climate.
this has been proven by all these so called treaties that show
billions and trillions of dollars being spent for little or no reduction
in c02 emissions.

We both are, which is what I stated.

For me, the journalistic experience of the author of that piece is what gives it credibility.

You may not agree with the points of the article, but that is not a reason to question the credibility of the article, when I have shown the author has some impressive journalistic credentials.
