Full title: Sarah Sanders Says ‘Overwhelming Majority’ of Americans Voted For Trump, Who Lost Popular Vote

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders faced an avalanche of questions from reporters on Monday, and one of the most contentious moments came during a back and forth with NBC’s Hallie Jackson.

Sanders used most of the briefing to defend President Donald Trump for slamming his political opponents amid the recent attacks on his critics and violent incidents around the country. At one point, Jackson asked Sanders “at what point does a national tragedy take precedence over the president needing to punch back” at his political enemies.

Sanders insisted that Trump has taken numerous occasions to condemn those who commit violence while healing the country in times of tragedy. Jackson countered by asking if Trump is “incapable” of toning down his rhetoric since he talks of unity in one moment before blaming others for national division in the next.

From there, Sanders attacked the media by saying they bear blame for national division if most of their coverage on Trump is negative. This led to Sanders proclaiming “[Trump] got elected by an overwhelming majority of 63 million Americans who came out and supported him and wanted to see his policies enacted. He’s delivered on that. He’s delivered on the promises he’s made.

“If anything, I think it is sad and divisive the way that every single thing that comes out of the media, 90% of what comes out of the media’s mouths is negative about this president,” Sanders said.

Sanders walked out of the briefing room after that.

Trump lost the popular vote in 2016 despite winning the presidency through the Electoral College.

Such brazen dishonesty is encouraging other politicians to follow suit. They've seen you don't really have to pull off lies artfully any longer. You can just lie brazenly and when fact-checked to your face, you can just lie some more, saying the facts are wrong.

While I do dislike the overdone obsession with talking about Trump, part of the reason for it is that he keeps doing things which are shocking/unacceptable, yet must be accepted because no one is calling him on it, and thus more talking about how shocking and horrible it all is.

Which doesn't make him right, it just (apparently) makes our democracy unable to resist the actions of Trump and the republicans hiding behind his bull**** to do real damage.

It is a sad annoyance at this point, Trump was not elected by an overwhelming majority of Americans and we all know that. But to Trump, Sanders, and whoever else there is no interest in telling the truth.

It would have been easier for Sanders to say all of it but the majority part. But hell no, they decided to come up with today's fabrication.

It is pathetic, and the history books will not be very kind to Trump's time in office.

I think early on they were trying to be normal, honest individuals and felt some shame, but at some point they figured it out.
I agree it's intentional trolling...why would they not?

- some percentage of people actually believe it
- Trump loves the bull****, you may be let go if you try to "correct the record"
- the base loves POTUS and his tribe trolling liberals, it's maybe their #1 priority at this point
- it ensures that Trump is not the lone liar out there flapping in the wind
- it adds to the volume, normalizing it and ensuring that when he says a really serious lies, fewer people can tell or care
- they probably figure it also provides legal cover...he was kidding! No one took that seriously, he (and his spokespeople) always says crazy stuff...

Their physicians should lie to them the same way, lie about their treatment, their prognosis, hell, their diagnosis. See if they start to admit that not lying is "good", and start to live that way. Practice what you preach.

Criticizing them when they suck is not only a patriotic act but the height of morality as well.

A big part of how we got to this Dark Age was them failing.

All of those points are pretty much dead on, though the trolling by lying goes all the way back to the beginning of the administration when White House staff would compete to see who could tell the most lies to the media. There was a semblance of shame for some people near the beginning, but that shame completely disappeared about a year ago.

The stupidest thing about Sanders' lie is that it gave the nation's factcheckers an invitation to remind us that a majority of voters voted against Trump.

Idiotic to give us a reminder of that fact. A fact which we know Trump hates so much that he had to make up a story about how he actually won the majority of legal votes cast. (and wasted taxpayer money trying to prove his lie)

You too, since you claim that my ideas are horrible I should be seeing some effort out of you to defeat them, but oh so rarely do you try. I see mostly personal attacks out of you which is so incredibly stupid given that I am Zen, you should be educated enough to know how hopeless your tactic is....yet you never seem to learn.
