OSLO (Reuters) - The leader of a daring World War Two raid to thwart Nazi Germany's nuclear ambitions has died aged 99, Norwegian government officials said on Sunday.

Joachim Roenneberg, serving behind enemy lines in his native Norway during the German occupation, in 1943 blew up a plant producing heavy water, or D2O, a hydrogen-rich substance that was key to the later development of atomic bombs.

Picked by Britain's war-time Special Operations Executive to lead the raid when he was only 23 years old, Roenneberg was the youngest member of Operation Gunnerside, which penetrated and destroyed key parts of the heavily guarded Norsk Hydro plant.

The subject of books and documentaries as well as movies and a TV drama series, the attack took place without a single shot fired.

If this effort failed it was entirely possible the USA would have faced the threat of becoming a Hiroshima.

He deserves a bigger R.I.P. than Yahoo. Crikey!

A real hero along with his team. Fortunately, Hitler was scatter brained never realizing how close Germany was to having the atom bomb. If Germany had gotten it, Germany would have won the war. The UK would have no option but to immediately surrender lest they lose London and Russian's massive frontline troop deployments would be indefensible.

Due to the massive size of the USA, it is possible the USA would have completed it's own A-bomb program in time, though we might have lost a couple coastal cities by then.

Not to rain on your parade but heavy water was not essential to the production of atomic bombs. We did not use it at all to make ours. That said anyone who killed Nazi's deserves praise.

Heavy water (D2O) was prized in the early days of research into nuclear weapons, but it really didn't have much to do with the construction of the weapons themselves. Heavy water can be used in production reactors, used to produce plutonium from U-238. As it turns out, though, the Hanford production reactors didn't use use heavy water at all.

Heavy water wasn't as important as people at the time feared it might be. It was useful, but not essential for experimental work. It could be used for plutonium production, but again, wasn't essential.

The Remy explosion was prolly nuclear. All roofs were ripped off from even a half mile out. An apprentice cobbler was killed by the shockwave at 3/4s of a mile.

And the U-234 had 1.1 tons of uranium oxide in her holds. I have a book that says .11 tons, but who the hell says .11 tons. They would’ve said 220 pounds instead. It could’ve even been 11 tons.

RIP Lieutenant. You did more for the world than most.

Incorrect.

The Western Allies had already produced controlled fission on 12/2/42, almost three months
before the Vemork raid, and heavy water or no heavy water the Germans were then nowhere
near a controlled fission capacity themselves.

Also, Germany's miltary situation was so dire by 2/43 (the last German Stalingrad units had
surrendered on 2/3/43) that with its much fewer resources, it simply could not afford full scale
nuclear weapon research on top of its conventional weapon requirements.

The lunatic left still carry on how we bombed Japan. It may have been best if Germany did get nukes before us.Had Germany nuked California back then we wouldn't have to put up with this insanity out of them today.

No google rseults for "Remy explosion", but whatever it was it was not a nuke.

Consider that a conventional expolsion could have kiilled somone futher than 3/4s
of a mile from the center of detonation: the WW1 explosion at Halifax harbor destroyed
buildings within a 1.6 mile radius.

That is in part because nuclear weapons are horrific, even if they were necessary. Which is still a debate, actually. Probably won't end any time soon.

Would have been far more likely for Nazi Germany to nuke the east coast though, as that was far more of a threat to them at the time.
Hell I could see them sneaking one into a port on a u-boat or something.
Maybe even a suicide mission.

Stopping just one of those ports from feeding supplies to Europe would have made the war at least somewhat longer.

Although come to think of it, depending when they were able to make one, if at all, they might have used it on the masses of troops attacking from Russia.

The entire Train wasn’t packed. Maybe three cars went up. In Halifax that was a 15,000 tonner, wasn’t it? The Mustang that touched off the train went free. The one who flew into the mushroom cloud became wingless and tailless.

The fighter groups survivours bought new stain glass windows for the church in the 1990s.

William Colby did a lot more. He stopped the transfer of 440,000 troops to Germany from Norway.

I is rather sad the amount of lip service that is being paid for this man, especially on some of the other community sites.

Hell, come to think of it. This man got to see the changing of an era and his passing should have been a moment somber, resolution. Yet, I can probably look on any site right now and still find division about his life choices.
