President Donald Trump on Thursday said he would to deploy the U.S. military and close the southern border if Mexico did not move to halt large groups of migrants headed for the United States from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

"I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught — and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!" Trump wrote on Twitter.

President Trump making a bold statement! Wow. Closing the border? Amazing.

Good. Mexico should not be allowing mass migrations of individuals through it's land. Nor do I agree that these are "refugees" under the definition of the term.

If so, then Mexico should be accepting and incorporating them as the first "free" nation they arrive in.

IMO I have no problem with using the Army to support ICE and Border Patrol units; picking up illegals en masse and transporting them to ships, then shipping them right back and dumping them where they came from.

If you want to immigrate, do it legally. Otherwise, stay home and fix your problems there.

If Trump claims that he can 'close the border' without the Great Wall of Trump then why is any wall needed? It seems insane to close the border just to stop (1K?) more folks from entering the US seeking to take 'jobs that US citizens will not do'. Trump should be asked how much he is willing to spend per illegal immigrant to stop them from entering the US.

The better plan would be to change the US tax income tax code to disallow deduction of labor costs for any 'undocumented' workers. They are coming here to get huge pay increases allowing them to not only live better here (and to create anchor babies) but to send money back 'home'.

Yep. Keeping troops guarding the border is a silly proposition if not addressing the incentives to coming here.

It is also not addressing those foreign nationals that come here legally as tourists, students or guest workers and simply 'forget to leave' when their legal status changes.

It's all bull**** to rile up the base and get them out to vote. The sad thing is that it works.

Mexico just sent a couple of planes with 500 police and riot gear to their Southern border.

According to various reports, the original caravan of 1,300 or so has "exploded" to somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000.

Let's see if Mexico can deal with that situation ... (sigh).

Indeed. Maybe we shut down the country's airports too.

That's kind of stupid. These people are dirt poor and have nothing. The US is the largest and biggest economy in the world. Unless you destroy the US and make us all dirt poor, these people will always have an incentive to come here.

Trumps BS does not significantly change the vote but actually putting troops on the border would get the 'wrong' voters riled up to vote.

You mean like riling up the base by falsely accusing Kavanaugh of sexual assault to get them out to vote? The sad thing is that it works.

Toe poppers, bouncing Betty’s and 175 fans.

Trump is not going to do anything except continue to make bold sounding speeches to his cheering campaign 'rally' crowds and soon end up with a demorat majority in the House. His latest 'budget' plan is, after increasing federal spending for 3 years and reducing federal some income tax rates, to 'propose' a 5% cut in 'all' federal spending (sequestration on steroids?).

Of course there will be the economic incentive, but cracking down on employers will make it extremely difficult for them to find any kind of work. That seems like a much better idea than an absurd wall that will cost millions to operate and maintain or having troops stationed along the border indefinitely.

I was being facetious. As I said, it's a complicated issue since this affects the economy and small businesses. The rhetoric crowd will say it doesn't matter, but it has an impact either way and generally why no politician has actually done anything.

Politicians, specifically congress critters, get re-elected by not doing anything so there is no reason for them to change. Some want more immigration (legal or not) to keep wages low and others want more immigration (legal or not) to change demographics (increase diversity?). The end result is no change in immigration law or its enforcement.

You are correct: crossing the border legally, usually via the airport, and overstaying one's welcome is the largest source of illegal immigration.

This idea the latin americans are flooding the border is substantial distortion of reality that plays well to the bigots among us that love living outside of reality. But, let's continue to obsess over things that aren't really problems.... it drives the less informed voter to the polls which helps the party that needs malleable voters.

I detect honesty evasion in the lefties post. Happens dang near 100% of the time.

OK, but why not nip all the above in the bud, and stop them from entering?
