$3 million raised for potential Collins 2020 challenger

I was born in 49 and very active in the period you wonder about. In fact, in 72 I was an elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

It is as bad today as it was at the height of Nixon. You had the war to compound it all but the division in the nation is different today because Trump is a minority president who more voters rejected. Nixon at least had the majority behind him right up to the very end.

And Nixon - for all his faults - was a man of government whereas Trump wants to destroy some of our institutions and weaken others that he sees as his enemy. That is the greatest danger Trump poses to our nation and is far worse than any single public policy issue he may push or advocate for like tax cuts or immigration changes or opposition to affirmative action programs or even Roe v. Wade.

Well, I have never seen anything like this before. Do you have any predictions or any positive insight?

her vote is a reminder that every elected Republican is a Trumpist. if you don't like Trump, vote against.

Why dont you go watch Collins speech. Maybe you will learn something. The swing votes here--Collins and Flake--cant stand Trump. Their votes were based upon the evidence or lack of it, not Trumpism

No, he doesnt. There is no comparison between today and the vietnam era. There were serious divisions then. Today all we have is a bunch of entitled, childish liberals throwing temper tantrums in the street. The rest of the nation is doing fine.

Money doesnt buy elections. Just ask Hillary.

I'm sure she'd trade the financial edge for RNC hacked emails and Russian assistance and C.A.'s improperly obtained trove of data

....all unwitting of course, because no politician would ever be part of such a conspiracy to help them win an election.

Sure. Thats what beat her

Who said it's what beat her? You made that up, admit it.

I said she'd have traded the financial edge for that (without any knowledge of it course...because you know, no one would accept such help knowingly).

Ahh yes the democrats in 72, you might recognize this quote from ole Muskie while running for president in 72 “Goddamn it, if I have to be nice to a bunch of sodomites to be elected President, then **** it.”

I’m glad you are so proud you were part of the DNC then

Autocracy rising. The rule of many is being replaced by the rule of one.

If the Blue Wave happens, the first agency to be scrutinized should be the FBI for the criminal manner they handled those follow-up investigations.

I disagree. I believe they were ham-strong and were only able to do what they were ordered to do. This will however come out at some point.

Oh so now the FBI is acting in a criminal manner because they followed the mandate that they were given? You guys are flip flopping faster than a freshly caught fish on dry land.

Trump has been saying they are corrupt and it's a deep state against him. Now he says they are exemplary. Which is it?

That said I think they did the best they could considering how constricted they were.

I'm not Haymarket but I too lived those times and think it will only get worse unless Trump is stifled in some way. I see violence on the horizon.

Wrong Bucko. We are as divided as we've ever been.

To see the two tribes take sides with the Kavanaugh fiasco made it perfectly clear.

Her vote is a reminder.... Innocent until proven guilty.

something the pink ***** posse cannot understand

we are told that if you believed Kavanaugh-you support RAPE

we were told if you thought Two Door Ford should have to actually muster some proof beyond her own claims-we were "mansplaining" or "disrespecting women"

we were told that women NEVER lie about this and thus proof is not needed.

I say screw the people who think that way. I see them as the enemy now.

It greatly depends on what happens four weeks from now on election day. If the recent upswing in Republican support continues and the Democrats fall short in taking back the House of Representatives - all bets are off as it will most likely embolden Trump and heaven only knows what could then happen. The thing I worry about more than anything else is Mueller issuing a scathing report that connects Trump strongly to the Russians for decades now and provides solid evidence he conspired with them to actively benefit from their involvement in his election. But Congress then does nothing about it. Nothing.

That would effectively mean there are no checks and balances on the president and Republicans in Congress putting the nation on notice that they will not do their job.

That will be a constitutional crisis like nothing we have seen in at least 150 years.

I would highly recommend that everyone here read an excellent book HOW DEMOCRACIES Die by Levitsky and Ziblatt. They explore this and other possibilities and give possible scenarios for resolution. Pay special attention to pages 208 - 212 in which they describe the political environment in the state of North Carolina which could well catch on to other states and even our national government.

not familiar with it. And it means nothing.

What kind of violence? Because what I remember about the 70s, is the college campus shooting. There is a lot of protesting and probably more to come, and Trump doesn't seem to have much respect for free speech or protesting. He tends to call them disparaging names. I encounter Trump supporters doing it online and in real life, so I am thinking if the federal government did something like that again, many of these people would say it was deserved.

It wasn't that long ago that Fox was downplaying protestors being pepper sprayed in the face.

The FBI was likely given directives on who they could interview and about what. One day, we will know. If, as trump says they had free rein, they would have chased down many more leads. Do not join trump in making them bad guys. They are not.

Susan Rice the former national security adviser to Potus Obama has all but announced her candidacy against Collins.

Physician Cathleen London has made clear she will run as a Democrat against Collins. Dr. London's background is similar to that of Collins, i.e., each has a history in Massachusetts and Republican party families. Collins had in fact been Massachusetts deputy state treasurer until Collins ran unsuccessfully for governor of Maine in 1994.

Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon

Democrat Sara Gideon, speaker of the Maine House, announced on Twitter that after November she would seriously consider running against Collins. Many believe Gideon's long and strong advocacy of Medicare in Obamacare pushed Collins to vote for preserving it in the 2017 Senate vote.

In the average of seven special elections before this one, Democrats were outperforming their partisan baseline by 16 percentage points. In Pennsylvania 18, Lamb, the Democrat, outperformed it by 22 percentage points -- a little better than average and essentially matching what they did in the Kansas 4 special election in April 2017.

Even if Trump-Kavanaugh Ma and Pa Kettle voters might knock 5 percent off the Democratic party swing the Republican candidates will still be hard pressed to return to Washington as the House majority. Trump thrives on voter hate and resentment, not gratitude and kisses for Kavanaugh or more Kavanaughs to follow.

Main Senator Angus King is securely up for reelection in November. King is the independent who caucuses with Senate Democrats and who tallied a record landslide in Main electoral politics by winning huge for a second term as governor. Sen. King provides a stark contrast to Collins and the Maine Ma and Pa Republican base of voters Collins appealed to with her vote for the Brettster Kavanaugh together with the traditional Mainiac Republican Yalie Greek brethren in beer and barf.

Maine's Ma and Pa Kettle Republicans elected the arsehole Republican Gov. Paul LePage who makes Trump look relatively stable and rational. Collins is herself a lifer on the public payroll to include GW's regional director of the SBA and the Washington staff of Sen. Bill Cohen. Collins lumberer father and her mother took turns being mayor eternal of Caribou. So Susan Collins learned early on how to soak and sap the taxpayer.

Good question. I really don't know, but we have had loonies incited by Trump's negative rhetoric on the media. Even resulting in deaths.

I proudly donated. Unfortunately I do not have a residence in Maine but I have inlaws there. Not very politically active people so I am encouraging them to get out and vote for what they can now and in 2020 when Collins is up. She will be forced out - she will be remembered in Maine as a sellout who turned her back on victims. Politicians like her are disgraces.
