WASHINGTON — The United States and Canada have reached a last minute deal to salvage the North American Free Trade Agreement, according to people familiar with the negotiations, overcoming deep divisions to keep the 25-year-old trilateral pact intact.

According to people briefed on the negotiations, Canada will ease protections on its dairy market and provide access that is similar to what the United States would have gained through the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade treaty that President Trump withdrew from last year.

The United States is poised to relent on its demands to eliminate an independent tariff dispute settlement system that Canada has said is a red line in negotiations, according to a person consulted on the negotiations.

Great job!! Kushner and Lighthizer worked extra hard this weekend to get this deal done!

So he withdrew us from the TPP then "negotiated" a deal basically identical to the TPP but declares it a big victory. Trump supporters really are this stupid aren't they?

Does it cause you actual physical pain that Trump made Trudeau his bitch by gaining concessions from Canada and giving up nothing in return?

Canada protected the first 2.6 million cars per annum from any future tariffs, which is no small feat considering that they export 1.8 million cars per year. I know trump supporters see the world exclusively in terms of "who was made whose bitch," but I'm not sure this qualifies.

On another note, if I traveled to years into the past and told everybody here that Republicans would come to hate Canada and identify more with Russia than our own Democratic institutions and even our fellow Americans, I'd be laughed off the forum.

Well in return we get to avoid all your dumbass Trump tariffs and have a privileged trade position with the US now, you pretty much gave us a trade advantage over other almost all other nations, going to increase that goods trade deficit with us.

We've been hearing for months, now, that Trudi was going bitch slap President Trump and how Canada was going to wash her hands of the U.S. (before they figured out that 60% of their food comes from the U.S.) and how this was going to be President Trump's undoing, while Canada cruised right along and the U.S. collapsed like The Walking Dead.

Did that happen, or is Canada hopping onboard?

Well Trump basically handed us a privileged trade position, you are taking out our competition, we are now the only game in town you have no choice to buy from us now and we can raise our prices. And in return we conceded nothing more than we already would have.

So the big win for Canada is that they avoided future tariffs?

Geeze you all are easy marks. :lamo

That is actually a big deal because you essentially took out our competition, all this will do is further increase the goods trade deficit you have with us.

haha… Sorry, bud, you might wanna do a bit of reading:

1) Supply management continues (Milk), with only modest concessions, not the blown up free for all first "demanded"
2) No hard limit on auto exports from Canada to US
3) Chapter 19 resolution process stays intact
4) No decision on "National Security" tariff horsecockery, NAFTA went forward anyway.
5) Cultural exemptions remain in place.

We got we wanted...a fair negotiation result. You put whatever label on that you need to to get to sleep tonight... ;) Fact remains, Trump's bull**** about "Canada will take what I give it, or else" nonsense turned out to be one of the most pathetic, failed bluffs in recent history, and the only one that looks like a "bitch" today is him. Truth is, you probably could have done better for yourselves, had Trump shown even the slightest bit of class and reasonability.

:)

Canada got the deal it wanted. We were always willing to negotiate, as we have for decades. We just weren't willing to get bent over. You guys smartened up and got the deal we were willing to accept. Not complicated.

Canada won a great victory with the trade deal because there is more open free trade for American companies moving into the Canadian markets and shipping the products back to the states.

Actually, no. The new plan puts caps on Canadian exports to the US. It also decreases the amount of product Canada can act as a pass-through for. This is good for Canada, for sure, forcing Canada to increase domestic production... but why did the Canadians need this Trump deal to do that?

It is certainly a win-win, which was always the goal from the beginning. Canada gets incentive to on-shore more of its manufacturing, and Mexican manufacturing is forced to provide more competitive salaries to Mexican manufacturing jobs. Why either of them needed this new agreement to do what is best for them is certainly a puzzler.

LOL. What was the deal you rejected back in June?

Trump never made any specific demands on what the trade deal would look like with Canada. Canada was left scrambling, though, when Mexico ended up striking a deal with the US.

It's sounding like Trudi had to give some ground.

Giving up your dairy market that you've protected so fiercely was all a part of the plan?

I bet you haven't even read the actual text of the deal.

Gee! The state run media wouldn't lie. Huh?

Protecting against wide open trade that would destroy our industry was part of the plan. Mission accomplished.

You think Trump wasn't under a crap ton of pressure to get this done by November? lol.. C'mon.
