States Sue Over Trump Administration Methane Regulation Rollback | MTPR

Tuesday, two states announced they’re suing the Trump administration just hours after it announced sweeping rollbacks of Obama-era regulations on methane pollution from oil and gas production.

Attorneys general from California and New Mexico filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in California over the rule revision just hours after it was announced by the U.S. Interior Department.

Methane is the most volatile component in natural gas & requires expensive refrigeration equipment to keep it contained as a liquid. If released into the atmosphere, methane is a dangerous greenhouse gas & is 30 times more potent at trapping solar energy than CO2. The states need to step up to control this dangerous emission because Trump has struck down Obama's policies regarding it.

States should be able to regulate their own environment.

If States want this to be a federally regulated thing then they need to petition Congress into making such regulations as law. Executive branch agencies should not be in the law making business. That is Congresses jurisdiction. That said, there's nothing that is stopping them from making their own regulations that apply to their State.

What is stopping them from instituting their own laws? Cows will be cows, and so will grandpas who drink too much beer with their cabbage and bean soups.

States should be able to regulate their own environment.

Does the release of methane into the atmosphere by a state JUST affect THAT state? No, it affects neighboring states as well and pretty much the country.

Air quality needs national and international regulation. Ever hear that old joke, "Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool."?

It Also, affects that State. Any State should be able to inspect any business for safety compliance.

I believe California could engender an "air quality" boom in our State. And, promote the progress of the "air quality sector", in the process.

What if, any establishment that allows smoking, should also have an "air cleaning system" that purifies the air in that establishment, so that smoking is no longer a hazard.

And other states that are affected by that business should also be able to inspect, hence the need for federal regulations.
