GOP senator: McCain is 'partially to blame' for controversy over White House flags

GOP Sen. James Inhofe (Okla.) on Monday said the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is "partially to blame" for the controversy over President Trump's raising and then re-lowering American flags to mark McCain's death.

The White House on Monday afternoon re-lowered its flags to half staff after facing widespread pushback for returning them to full staff less than 48 hours after McCain's death on Saturday.

In response to a question about the flag controversy, Inhofe, who is expected to succeed McCain as the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the former GOP presidential nominee was not "courteous" to Trump.

"Well, you know, frankly, I think that John McCain is partially to blame for that because he is very outspoken," Inhofe told reporters, according to CNN. "He disagreed with the president in certain areas and wasn't too courteous about it."
Inhofe during a floor speech about McCain on Monday referred to him as a "hero."

"We are dealing with a hero when we deal with Senator McCain," Inhofe said. "He wasn't always the most lovable person to be around, but he was a fighter and never shied away from a good fight."

McCain and Trump had a publicly contentious relationship during the final years of the Arizona Republican's life.

This is exactly what is wrong with politics today. There is no excuse to publicly behave surly teenager - no excuse to refuse to say the proper platitudes, lower the flag, respect the man even if you disagreed with him. Powerful people in govt can disagree with each other, and still behave like adults. Yes, from what I know McCain could be a bastard at times. I'm sure he hurt feelings and made people angry. They are adults, and are there by choice.

But this?! A senator blaming McCain for causing the president's choice to loser the flag because McCain just wasn't nice enough to him. Trump is such a special snowflake that it's wrong to hold him to the same standards we would hold any other civil adults. Trump is victim politics personified - apparently some Republicans embraced that when they dropped their concern about the deficit and small government.

Sounds like a guy running his mouth looking for attention.

Blame? More like credit. His outspokenness (against or about whom or what ever) is why the flag is at half mast. That's what we're losing. Of course it goes up and back down, testament to his exceptional quality. I'm surprised it wasn't at 3/4 mast at some point, McCain might do anything. The flag is maverick.

Red:
Oh, puh-lease! I thought I'd "seen it all," but I clearly had not. "Victim blaming" the dead for the choices and actions of the living. That's a new one.

Like before, someone else sharing their opinion.

No real reason to attribute this kind of thing to Trump, seeing as he has already said his piece on the issue as is.

This is just another faux issue that people are trying to stoke flames over.

Maybe Inhofe is right. He just got in the way of the left raising McCain to sainthood

Trump continues to show that he sorely lacks basic human decency.

I have noticed that you seem to have a very big problem stepping back and looking at the actual issue. Since I believe that you do have the ability to maturely and intelligently asses matters in a healthy manner, I have to conclude that you do this because it is easier to dismiss an insignificant tree than to look at a decaying forest.

The issue is not simply the flag or this one GOP Senator's simple opinion. This is about an infection in which Trump is leading, but did not start with Trump. This insistence that a concreted divide be maintained at all costs, began long before Trump, and is exponentially hardening and making matters worse for the country. This bitter divide, based on largely nothing, has gotten so bad that an offensive populist and demagogue like Trump can act like a child in the most powerful position on the planet, betraying all the Constitutional norms that built our country, while his political loyalists actively encourage bad behavior just so that they fall out of favor from their most bull-headed and shallow constituency in which the foolish Tea Party-mentality largely created.

By the way, you know who also wasn't to blame? Even German victims under the Third Reich chose to alleviate all sins from Hitler by blaming all bad things on his underlings, who performed bad things behind Hitler's back. Hitler, after all, was a good and decent man who loved Germany.

But hey, "just another faux issue."

"There is no excuse to publicly behave surly teenager"
Now look at the behavior of leftists everywhere. Look at the words and behaviors of leftists on THIS site. Maybe...check out your OWN words.

Irony meters everywhere are shattered.

Oh FFS

Lock him up, lock him up

How many more silly threads about a flag being up, down or all around will there be today ??

The Left has nothing to do with Inhofe being rancid garbage. He’s the ****ing idiot that brought in the snowball denying climate change. Oklahoma is turning at the state level.

Do put my name out there, hanger4. When do you think 🤔 #45 supporters will have their ‘Coming to Jesus’ and ‘Coming to Legacy’ moments?

GOPcons Lost Veteran’s groups yesterday. They’ve already bled farmers and rural communities. 70 days until we begin to exorcise this gop bubonic plague.

McCain was a lot like Trump. He did things which were politically expedient.

McCain was NOTHING like trump, at all. # 45 is a stain on our name. #45 is a Criminally Insane Traitor

Yeah, you run with that.

Yeah, you run with that.

#45 has the runs, not Honorable Americans.

Once you lose Veterans, you don’t get them back for a generation.

Just for a minute -- imagine if Trump had died instead of McCain. We know they were political rivals. Do you think McCain would have sung Trump's praises or insisted that the flag be kept at half-staff? After all the bad things the two politicians said about one another, do you think McCain would do an about-face and say nice things? I like McCain, and I'm sorry he's gone, but he was resolute in his beliefs. I don't think he would have said anything bad about Trump, I just don't think he would have said anything positive.

And, I think Trump would have been (at least partially) at fault for McCain's response. So, is the verso so unimaginable?

Politics shouldn’t be this petty. The President should lead by example rather than act like a shock jock. Not the biggest McCain fan, but he deserved better. Aren’t we supposed to hold Chief Executives to a higher standard?

Quite simply, no, he would not have shown his rear as 45 has.

McCain isn't to blame. Benito McCheeto is responsible for his own childish and petty actions.

That would be Benito Mussolini, IL DUCE. The non-verbal comparisons between the two are a perfect match. Their simpleton word salad 🥗 8th grade at best.
