‘You know what you did’: Keith Ellison’s ex-girlfriend, Karen Monahan, speaks out
“It dang near took my life at the end."

Karen Monahan, a former girlfriend of Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison (D) who has accused the congressman of domestic abuse, told ThinkProgress Monday that she did not plan on going public about the texts and the video that allegedly shows Ellison abusing her.

“I didn’t want to mention the video or the texts,” she said. “I’m not here to prove to anyone. I’m just here to share my story.”

The claims of abuse were first made public by Monahan’s son, Austin Aslim Monahan, in a Facebook post Saturday evening, in which he claimed that he saw a video on his mother’s computer in 2017 that showed Ellison abusing his mother while yelling obscenities.

He's not running for reelection to Congress. Funny how this comes out right before the primary for Minnesota AG. I'm withholding judgement until the video comes out.

My name is Austin Monahan and I am writing this letter on behalf of me and my brother.
My brother and I watched our mom come out of pure hell after getting out of her relationship with Keith Ellison. For several months we knew something wasn’t right and couldn’t figure it out. When we asked our mom if everything was ok, she told us she was dealing with some stress and would be ok.
In the middle of 2017, I was using my moms computer trying to download something and I clicked on a file, I found over 100 text and twitters messages and video almost 2 min long that showed Keith Ellison dragging my mama off the bed by her feet, screaming and calling her a “****ing bitch” and telling her to get the **** out of his house. The messages I found, were mixed with him consistently telling my mom he wanted her back, he missed her, he knew he ****ed up and we wished he could do things different, he would victim shaming, bully her, and threaten her if she went public. I text him and told him I know what you did to my mama and a few other things.
I met up with my mom that night and asked her what happened. She said nothing happened until I told her I saw a video and hell of a lot of messages saying something different. She finally talked. My brother and I were so angry and hurt for our mom. We were ready to go public but our mom begged us not to and she along with others convinced us it wasn’t in our moms best interest.

I saw message after message through out all that time, where my mom was telling him she wasn’t going back to him but still saw his humanity and offered restorative justice. I honestly don’t see how she would offer him that, but thats her choice.

Sitting all this time, watching what our mom went through and not being able to say or do anything was hard as hell. None of you know the hell our family has gone through. I don’t think half of you would even care. We watched her so called political friends stand by say or do nothing. People had an idea what happened and never reached out to my mom. The same people who are posting about social justice are ready to smear my mom, protect a person who abused her and broke the law. You think we give a **** about a politics when we saw what our mom went through? She may not matter to none of you, but she is our mom, our kids grandmother and she is actually someone. There is a lot more he has done to my mom and others that we saw in the text but our mom can decide if and when she wants to tell the world that part.

Whether we saw the video or read all those messages, we still would have believed her if she had told us. #Ibelieveher

My mom has always tried to protect me and my brother. She doesn’t have to protect us anymore and we aren’t letting her stand alone. When we found out our mom was planning on sharing her story, that is all we needed to hear for us to share ours and stand with our mom. You want to smear someone, try to lie about a person who didn’t do **** to deserve the ongoing emotional, physical abuse, smear me and my brother.

I use to believe the Democrats were the ones who would stand by a person who went through this kind of abuse, now I know both Democrats and Republicans could care less when it comes to violence toward women and girls.

I have learned a lot about how patriarchy has shaped me as a 25 year old through all this. I just became a father and I am working on how patriarchy influenced thoughts ad decisions I have made as a young man so I can teach my son better. I am starting today by standing with my mom, my sons grandma. It is not just on women and girls to speak out, it is on men to do some of the emotional work. I’m not here to prove **** to anyone, I’m just stating facts. You can take it or leave it.

I'm wondering, in light of these allegations, if Ellison still believes "no one is above the law"

"No one -- not even a President -- is above the law," Ellison said, turning his attention to President Trump in a statement. "From immigration reform to protecting our air and water, it has never been more important to have a leader as attorney general who can stand up against threats to our neighbors' health or freedoms."

I don't know....looks pretty bad. No reason I can think of for her kids to make this stuff up, or for her to do so. I think if I was voting in the primary, I'd pick one of the other candidates, especially since he's been accused of it before by a previous wife.

It's also a bit unfair to ask the woman to publicly release video of her being abused. I'd be OK with letting a couple of news outlets view it only, and report on what they see. Seems like enough.
 
Well, I despise Keith Ellison for a multiplicity of reasons, namely his dishonesty vis-a-vis his relationship with Louis Farrakhan, so I am naturally inclined to believe these charges against him. Certainly, because of his self-same dishonesty, I do not believe his denials. With that said, whether or not I believe these accusations hinges on the credibility of his accuser and her accusation. Sometimes two people can be equally dishonest and make things up.
 
This has come up before with him, so I think there's probably something to it. If there is, he should pay the piper.

Its between Ellison and his constituents. I don't see you holding Trump to the same standards, I wonder why???
 
As I said in the other thread...

I'll wait for two things to happen before rendering judgment:

1)Other victims come out of the woodwork to accuse him. An assailant almost never has just one victim.
2)The dreaded non-denial-denial

These are the same standards I applied to Moore, Franken, Cosby, Trump and Weinstein.

As Vox recently noted, Minnesota has elected a Republican attorney general just once since 1955.


If you study behavioral patterns of people at all, you have to conclude that Keith Ellison has this type of abusive personality. He may have gotten away with the allegations from Ms. Monahan because she appears reluctant to present hard evidence but the 911 report isn't something he can just dismiss. Like OJ, Ellison has a history.. Ellison is so typical of so many who run for high office. It's about personal power and control.
 
If he is ever convicted of a crime in this regards, do post it. I still claim a person is 100% innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. These trials by MSM gossip are not something I accept.
 
I would guess that in at least 25% of divorces the woman claims the husband was verbally and psychologically abusive." It's a standard check-off item for computer generated divorce petitions.

I am confident even a higher percentage than that make the most bitter and intense condemnations of ex boy friends.

I also would guess the majority of married couples - married now - and divorced couples while marriage - had some real verbal battles in which insults and obscenities were used. I also have noticed in politics it only matters if the gossip and accusation is against the man.

It is disappointing that he won the primary, but i asked for links showing the large outpouring of support from the left before his victory. Where was that? It was claimed there was. Or is it one of the usual claims from the right that can't be backed up but must be true because "Liberals...uh...Obama...uh...Hillary...uh...Bill Clinton...look, Chappaquidick!"

Did you withhold judgment for Weinstein until the video came out, or Trump until the videos came out?
 
Who took the video of him abusing her? How did she get it? And for what purpose was she hanging onto it secretly on her computer?
