China hits back with tariffs on $60B in U.S. goods

Last time we did a big trade war, we got the Great Depression and WW2...

Exactly, which is why they formed the WTO in the first place. A whole bunch of nations engaged in nationalism and protectionism and wouldn't you know it... war breaks out.

Is this the part where it gets easy to win the trade war? Or?

Shh!!!! (You'll disturb the Trump supporters claiming there is a tariff / trade war winner.)

I'm just going to wait and see how this works out. We know that Trump has been a bit overbearing on China, but we also know that they aren't innocent in all of this and who knows just who else will jump in to pressure them as well, because we aren't the only ones they mess with. If it hurts us, it hurts us.
No real difference then any other president we've had in the past.
Well, Trump's "theory" is that we have to experience some pain during negotiations, in order to get a better deal for the future.

Actually, that's a concept that on the surface could make sense. It is that way with many things and life and the world. But I'm no fan of tariffs, and definitely not a fan of Trump's erratic & capricious nature, nor do I believe he is knowledgeable & capable in these matters.

So yeah, we'll have to see.

But if I were an underemployed Trump supporter waiting for Trump and the government to bring back manufacturing to my small town, or waiting for him & government to reopen the local coal mine, I'd strongly consider having an alternative plan. In fact, if I were in either of the categories I would've moved-on a long time ago.

Understandable though we all knew, that not all of those jobs were going to be coming back and even Trump admitted to this. Though, I think that was the week he let it out that he likes two scoops of ice-cream for dessert and the media lost their collective minds.

Trump is knowledgeable on business and the interactions in that world, but you and I both know that he isn't the only forming these decisions. The men beside him that are playing part in this are probably just as bloody minded when it comes to business, as any wall street banker. However I do think you are right, as Trump's nature could be a large guiding hand in all of this. Though those same people beside him could be just as much of a way to keep the reigns so to speak.

Free trade with China would be nice, with taxation still in play of course.

Maybe we can get them to actually enforce copyright laws as well...? Not holding my breath on that one.

I'm 110% behind that!

The entire purpose of the Trump tariffs is to force countries to the negotiation table to ultimately get rid of tariffs.

that would be analogous to a nation theorizing that exploding nukes over cities is a way to force countries to to the negotiation table to ultimately get rid of exploding nukes over cities?
