He entered a plea agreement asserting his innocence but acknowledging the possibility of a conviction

The grandson of a former Virginia governor has avoided jail time in the alleged rape of a fellow student at University of Virginia.

Stephen Dalton Baril had his charges reduced from felony rape and sodomy to misdemeanor sexual battery and felony unlawful wounding.

It must be nice to be politically connected. But his life will be permanently scarred by both the Google & the memory of what he did & gotten away with.

He did not get away with anything....

This explains it:

Charlottesville police Detective Regine Wright-Settle testified that between late January 31 and early February 1, M.H. said Baril met up with her at Coupe’s, a popular bar on the Corner, and bought her a drink. She left with Baril, whom she met during a mixer between her sorority and his fraternity, with the intention of him walking her to her nearby apartment.

As she and Baril were walking from Coupe’s to her place, the young woman told Wright-Settle that Baril playfully picked her up and redirected her to his apartment. When they got there, she immediately asked to use the restroom, and when she emerged, the Richmond native was standing in nothing but his underwear.

Defense attorney Rhonda Quagliana asked the detective to show a surveillance video of the two walking down University Avenue and Wertland Street, which never shows Baril pick her up. When the lawyer noted that her account didn’t match the footage, the woman who brought the charges erupted in tears, turned to the person on her right in disbelief, and crying, she dashed for the door. A deputy followed her out.

Wright-Settle read a series of text messages from that night, in which Baril texted the young woman after the reported rape: “Sorry for being over excited,” and “ I hope you’re not mad at me. Let me know if I was being stupid.”

The next morning, he allegedly texted, “Haha. My head hurts,” and asked if she was on “the pill.”

To that, M.H. replied that it doesn’t matter because she “stopped [him],” and said it was a bad decision. Baril replied, “What was a bad decision? I hope you had fun. I did.”

Not really great connections: Mr Baril’s grandfather is former Republican governor John Dalton, who served from 1978 to 1982. His father, Steve Baril, ran for Republican attorney general of the state in 2005 but was unsuccessful. Plea deals suck and can be ridiculous. But since the victim agreed to it.

The victim agreed to let this guy off after he raped & sodomized her? What happened to 'hell hath no fury'? If it had been me I would only have settled for him to be sent away for years.

That's what the story you linked to said. She agreed to the plea deal.

Money = good lawyers = reduced charges = probation often

False....DA's have no ability to try all the people that they charge, they can barely manage the 7% or so that they do try, so what they do is massively overcharge and then bully their mark into a plea "deal"...which tends to run about what they should have gotten anyways at best. Innocent people get convicted in this way, because they have no ability to stand up to the abusive state.

In this case a guy gets a felony conviction and I bet at least 20 years registering as a sex offender for something that never should have been in the so-called justice system to begin with.

This is not justice.

I note with interest all the interest in trying to paint this with the stink of corruption when it clearly is not.

I also know that "We must stop R corruption!" is the D sales pitch this fall.*HILARIOUS I KNOW!*

Coincidence this is probably not.

The so-called journalists suck.

The people are morons...

WAY TOO OFTEN

I wonder if that come's with a "have to register as a sex offender" tag?

We see all too many crooks getting away with crimes. We see too many crooks not getting sentences which fit the crimes. But we know that God will not pervert justice so in the end everyone will get a fair trial and a just recompense for the deeds done in the body, whether good or evil.
