Methodist church hits Sessions with complaint over family separation - Business Insider
Over 600 clergy and lay members of the United Methodist Church filed a formal complaint against Attorney General Jeff Sessions, accusing him of violating church law.
In a letter released Monday, signatories charged Sessions with child abuse and other offenses regarding the Justice Department's controversial family separations policy.
A national, formal complaint of this manner is unprecedented in the history of the Methodist Church and could lead to Sessions' expulsion from the religious body.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions could be expelled from the Methodist Church after more than 600 clergy and lay members filed a historic formal complaint charging him with violating church law over the Justice Department's controversial "zero-tolerance" immigration policy of separating families who illegally cross the US-Mexico border.

Over 600 people, including 318 reverends, signed a letter invoking a rarely used procedure to file a formal complaint against Sessions. The complaint accuses him of perpetuating child abuse, immorality, and racial discrimination.

The letter also said Sessions citing the scripture verse Romans 13 to justify the separations policy counted as the "dissemination of doctrines contrary to the standards of doctrine of the United Methodist Church."
At least some on the religious right seem to get it.

kick him out, kick him out, kick him out ...........

and if SMU could bulldoze the G W Bush Library then that would be pretty cool too

No, just rename it.

Methodists Call for Expulsion of Bush, Cheney from Church

https://bushlibraryblog.wordpress.c...all-for-expulsion-of-bush-cheney-from-church/

We, the undersigned, do hold that George W. Bush, a member of Park Hill United Methodist Church (UMC) in Dallas, Texas, and Dick Cheney (local membership unknown) are undeniably guilty of at least four chargeable offenses for lay members as listed in 2702.3 of the 2000 Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church. These offenses are: crime, immorality, disobedience to the Order and Discipline of The UMC, and dissemination of doctrine contrary to the established standards of doctrine of The UMC. For these offenses, we the undersigned call for an immediate and public act of repentance by the respondents. If the respondents do not reply with sincere and public repentance for their crimes, we demand that their membership in the United Methodist Church be revoked until such time that they sincerely and publicly repent.

We, the undersigned, are also very much disturbed by President Bush’s many references to the significance of Christian faith in the decisions that he has made as President of the United States. George W. Bush has called Jesus his “favorite philosopher”, said that Jesus changed his life, and that his decisions are often guided by prayer. In fact, we feel that most of his actions as president have directly contradicted the philosophy of Jesus. Jesus said to feed, clothe, and shelter the “least of these”, not to starve, strip, and bomb them.

I believe complete removal of The G W Bush Library from the property of SMU in University Park would be completely appropriate

War criminals will not be welcomed by Saint Peter, Jesus, nor The Father

Why should they be welcomed by SMU?

Religious persecution, sanctimonious grandstanding and bigoted castigation is always wrong. Until it isn't.

Yeah I'm sure you were just a broken hearted when the Catholic Church wanted to boot Nancy Pelosi and other Dems for their abortion views.

I do not think it is wise and certainly not appropriate to attack one's political opponents by going through their church and ginning up their coreligionists and fellow members of their congregation against them on the basis of their political positions. It is right up there with going after one's political opponents' family members (when they themselves are not involved in politics). I think it is underhanded, cowardly and evil. A person's relationship (or lack thereof) with their God and their faith is their business. I do not care who does it. You don't go after a political opponent through their family. You do not go after a political opponent through their church. People who do that are wicked pieces of garbage, whether it is going after Jefferson Sessions or Nancy Pelosi.

Ever just think that just maybe there's a boat load of people at dude's church that don't agree with his stand on this? That his stance runs counter to their morals and views?

I do not care if they do not like it. I'm atheist enough to know that they are not God and should not pretend that their beliefs are God's beliefs. Last I checked the Methodist Church was neither the Democratic Methodist Church nor the Republican Methodist Church. There is no excuse to take one's partisan secular political positions or legal actions as a governmental officer as grounds for other members of that congregation to try and excommunicate that member. That is disgusting, revolting and wrong.

Perhaps members of your own church who hated you for your political beliefs got you kicked out of your own congregation, and you feel that what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. But people who try to pose their political beliefs as God's Holy Writ and then cudgel fellow members of their church with it ("Submit yourself to my...I mean God's political agenda or we kick you out!" make me sick. It is evil, cruel, and self-destructive.

I always figured that a church was supposed to be an institution that is supposed to speak up against injustice and immorality and do what one can to help others?

I was with you until you doubled-down on a call for the literal removal of the entire library. That's just stupid. Maybe rename it after a civil rights leader or something, but FFS don't literally destroy it.

While I realize churches are certainly free to do such things I have to admit that such tactics make me uncomfortable. Politicians should be held accountable to the voters, not the churches.

Whew! It's a good thing that no religious persecution, sanctimonious grandstanding or bigoted castigation are occurring, in that case.

Always happy to be the bearer of good news!

Members of churches vote.

318 reverends meddle in politics they best take a look at their non profit status certificate.

Or maybe 318 reverends speaking out against actions that run counter to their personal moral compasses.

Or as members of a church that feel compelled to speak out against actions that they see as flat out wrong.

My issue is when the church itself takes punitive action against a member who is a politician for not carrying out policies the church doesn’t like. I’m not talking about members voting one way at election time but rather actions like kicking them out of the church/excommunicating them.

I’m not saying it is illegal. I am saying it is a practice I don’t like. Just as I wouldn’t like it if the Catholic Church excommunicated everyone who voted in favor of abortion rights or excommunicated judges who upheld Roe vs Wade.

When certain politicians pander-to and uplift certain churches, that perhaps changes the accountability factor.
