Trailing in the Republican congressional primary to an opponent supported in last-minute tweets by President Donald Trump, U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford told supporters in South Carolina on Tuesday night: "I'm going to lose this race."

Results were still coming in as he made the comments in suburban Charleston. With much of the vote counted, state Rep. Katie Arrington was on the cusp of winning outright. But as Sanford spoke, the race was still too close to call.

Arrington says Sanford criticized Trump too much, calling him a "Never Trumper." One of her ads said "it's time for Mark Sanford to take a hike — for real this time." That refers to 2009, when Sanford's aides said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail while he actually visited a woman with whom he was having an affair in Argentina.

Mark Sanford has been real open critic of Trump the last year or so but he was an honest to goodness fiscal conservative, something the House and Senate could use a few dozen more. Here is hoping Katie Arrington is fiscally conservative too.

Saw this discussed on MORNING JOE and Scarbrough was spot on - the GOP is now a cult of Trump. That is it in a nutshell pure and simple.

Sanford voted for the Trump agenda 87& of the time and was supported by the Freedom caucus. But unless you are with Trump for every step of the journey, 87% is heresy and must be punished.

This is why the GOP cowards are GOP cowards.... and they will not change. They have gotten into bed with Trump and the only way they are getting out is if they are kicked out by Trump himself .
 
If this is another attempt to separate Trump from his supporters it will be a colossal failure.

Trump's endorsement happened after the fact. It had nothing to do with it. Trump's views differ substantially from traditional gop views. He satisfied neither side. Few do.

He lost his primary because the gop is dysfunctional. They lashed out in frustration because they can't get stuff done. Self-imposed term limits. He isn't the first. He won't be the last.

There is no other reason.

What is this golden age you speak of? Yes, millionaires and billionaires are getting richer but 2017 job creation was the slowest since 2012. So far the gains to wages have been... zero. Here's the rate of growth of real wages for ordinary workers:

Don't be in denial. Sanford's opponent won because she labeled Sanford as a NeverTrumper which was what he
had become. Trump's endorsement as late as it came helped in a close race & Sanford's attacks on Trump sealed
his fate`

Nonsense. Trump's late endorsement came because he is a wuss and didn't want to get caught endorsing the loser again as he did in other places like Alabama.

If Sanford were winning Dumb Don would have endorsed him.
