Bill Maher Begs for a Recession to get rid of Donald Trump

HBO’s “Real Time” host Bill Maher admitted that he hopes the American economy will crash so that President Donald Trump will be voted out of office.

Maher, along with his panel, discussed the success of the Trump administration’s growing economy, but remained skeptical about how long the prosperity will last.

“I feel like the bottom has to fall out at some point, and by the way, I’m hoping for it because I think one way you get rid of Trump is a crashing economy,” Maher said during the June 8 show. “So please, bring on the recession. Sorry if that hurts people but it’s either root for a recession, or you lose your democracy.”

And here I thought rich liberals were for the working people, many who would be hurt a lot by Maher's wishful thinking..... I guess Maher who wishes for a recession, forgot where he came from, a working class family.

He is just too stupid for words.

Even CNN published a condemnation of Mayer by saying:
This is wrong on so many levels. It's despicable for Maher, who is wealthy enough to have donated $1 million in 2012 to a super PAC, to root for an economic downturn in exchange for political gain.
If our nation were to hit a recession again, millions of Americans who are not well-off like Maher would horribly suffer, as unemployment would climb and families would struggle to put food on the table.

I actually think it’s satire. He was dating Ann Coulter for awhile.

But.... dinner dates were problematic... LOL

See, that what happens when you listen to people like Sean Hannity. You start believing what comedians say is real.

Are you saying Newsweek and CNN, two of my sources above, are rooted in right-wing punditry?

Got anything else to say about the thread?

Mahar has lots of money. He doesn't care.

she used to play him like a trout on his politically incorrect. I used to watch that show constantly and she was on several times. the last time I recall seeing er she showed up in a change of costume-long pants rather than her normal minis. Bill look crestfallen and said "no skirt" and she gave him a cutting little smile-sort of like a upper crust heiress would give the gardener if he tried a clumsy pass at her. It was hilarious

Oh. ... OH...lolz
Seriously, I wish it were satire. He's getting smoked for his comments.

I saw that video. It's pretty good.

I guess his snobby ass forgot all about the 2007-2012 recession where tens of millions of people lost their jobs.

He has it all wrong. If he thinks Donald Trump can destroy our democracy he doesn't really have faith in our democracy to begin with. You want democracy, don't re-elect Trump and have a good economy. It can be done because we have such a democracy.

From 2007:

Mr. Trump said he is poised to invest in depressed property as the downturn moves through individual cities. "People have been talking about the end of the cycle for 12 years, and I'm excited if it is," he said. "I've always made more money in bad markets than in good markets."

Maher is admitting to wishing for a recession because he believes it is for the ultimate good of the nation. It's not good, but it's not Trump level of bad.

Trump was getting excited about large numbers of people suffering because it would help him buy a golden toilet.

In the same show he said liberals were losing and he thanks them for putting him on their "to be fired for saying insulting things," lists. I really don't think he cares.

Maher is about as Moderate as they come these days. And that's saying something. The guy strikes both sides pretty hard.

I get it... he's telling a joke. He is making a point about how people would rather go into recession than have Trump as President. It's purely partisan, just like the folks who talked down employment and job numbers (while cherry picking GDP growth time frames) during the Obama administration, only to cheer less than or equal results.

Yeah, and who caused that to happen? Give you a hint. Pretty much same people who are going to cause it to happen again.

Meh, I prefer to let conservative talking heads against America. They're good at that.

There's no denying that Maher presented a false dichotomy. The thing is this: Maher is a comedian and the remark was sardonically delivered. I acknowledge that in writing, it doesn't appear that way, but upon seeing/hearing Maher make it, one cannot help but "catch" the sarcastic/sardonic tenor of his comment.

From the rubric article:
Arguably [Trump's] biggest political accomplishment to date, Trump’s economy saw record low unemployment numbers last month.

  • [*=1]Trump's "biggest political accomplishment to date" was getting elected.
[*=1]Asserting that a POTUS, any POTUS, plays(-ed) a seminal role in unemployment rates is overly generous.
[*=1]Regardless of who deserves credit for the continued decrease in unemployment rates, it's is far too early to remark upon the impact thereof as being an accomplishment.
[*=1]Unemployment rates have hit "record lows" month after month for the past eight years. While others may, I'm certainly not going to give a POTUS accomplishment credit for doing nothing to materially screw up a coincident indicator trend that was well underway long before his/her assumption of the Office of the POTUS.
So, can one oversimplify the role and germanity of the unemployment rate vis-a-vis a POTUS' impact? Well, yes, of course, one can; people, most notably partisans, can and routinely do so as to advance some political point. Perspicacious observers (audience members) at all points along the political spectrum, however, know better than to put any stock in conclusions/inferences based on illogical pruning (or it's antipode).

There's nothing in his tone to suggest he is anything less than serious.

See, that what happens when you listen to people like Sean Hannity. You start believing what comedians say is real.

Sometimes people take what comedians say seriously.

Example: Roseanne

Where did Trump say anything about suffering in his comment?
