The Miss America beauty pageant is scrapping its swimwear segment and will no longer judge competitors on physical appearance.

The evening gown section is also being axed, with contestants asked to wear something that makes them feel good and expresses their personal style instead.

Former winner Gretchen Carson broke the news on ABC's Good Morning America.

At last!! The foreign press is finally paying attention to what is REALLY important in America.

PS - The estimated time for someone to claim that this is all a Muslim plot to force American women to wear "Burke Hats" is less than five minutes.

Isn't that kind of missing the point of a beauty pageant? Why not just end the whole thing?

This fits with the Sports Illustrated moves to embrace chunky girls in their swimsuit editions. And while there is nothing wrong with a little extra meat on the bones....at all...what is happening is they are even celebrating/promoting obesity. So it won’t be long before there are some real heavy girls in the Miss Murica contest.

I've always disliked beauty pageants. They're basically meat markets that reinforce the notion for little girls, and everyone else, that beauty is a requirement for a successful female.

I wish they'd just end the damned thing, but am willing to see how the experiment plays out.

Their ratings were already going down. Thanks to the internet porn and skin sites, the majority of the ones really watching the pageant were other women or people that don't know how to navigate the internet.

Seriously, I'd like to know what normal men (with today's internet) were saying "Gee, I'm going to sit down with a beer and watch the Miss America Beauty Pageant"? I have far better things to do than waste my time watching a pageant with commercials.

I'll file this under the "I don't care" category.

Im not sure what purpose it serves....does the winner get money of endorsement deals??

Wikipedia is surprisingly sparse on what the winner actually does....

"Miss America Inc." has been denying that it is a "beauty contest" for years. What "Miss America Inc." says its purpose is is to "select the most representative (young [single {heterosexual <non-liberal>}]) American woman".

Besides, since Mr. Trump sold "Miss America Inc." in 2015 (it's now owned by FOX News) he hasn't had as much of a chance to explore the ins and outs of its contestants.

Showing young women that their value is dependent upon their appearance is something we need to move away from.

Absolutely right. It's an odd conflict -- they are a beauty pageant that denies judging people in the basis of appearance. This self loathing and lack of a clear identity is causing the pageant to die a slow death for years. There's nothing wrong with changing into something else -- they just need to decide what that is.

It’s a pageant for women, giving women opportunities at scholarships and modeling careers watched BY women...where exactly is the misogyny? I mean...believe me...I couldn’t care less if the pageants all went away...but still....

That's part of what's making this so strange. This fills a particular niche. The participants want a beauty pageant. If they wanted to participate in another kind of contest, there are plenty of opportunities to do so.

Exactly. My wife and daughters watch it together and I am relegated to the man cave in the basement (or if I know about it in advance, it makes for a good weekend to go camping and fishing. They like it. I couldn’t care less.
