The Washington Post has broken news that could be the most important political change for the cannabis industry to date, suggesting that Senator Cory Gardner (R: CO) has struck a deal with President Trump regarding the rights of states to regulate cannabis. While there is no final deal, the Senator, who has been blocking Department of Justice nominations, suggest that his discussions with other senators will yield a bill that would permanently address the issue of federal enforcement.

President Trump has promised a top Senate Republican that he will support congressional efforts to protect states that have legalized marijuana — defusing a months-long standoff between Sen. Cory Gardner and the administration over Justice Department nominees.

Whale oil beef hooked.
I knew if I hung around long enough Trump would do something good, something positive. Only question the states need to answer now is, how much tax revenue do we want this to generate.

I will not believe it until which time Trump smokes at least a kilo of sinsy buds, in The Oval Office with the highest ganjaoidz from Jamaica, mon

Boehner got to him. Dang those lobbyists work fast. Anybody check on our VP lately? Hopefully no GOP scandal comes out involving gay sex....

We’ll see how he feels tomorrow.

Interesting move, could be trying to justify firing Sessions so he can directly get to Mueller.

The problem with this is "Trump has promised." All that has to happen is for someone to whisper something else in his ear and it changes.

I'd be happily surprised if the GOP actually introduced a bill to protect state industries from federal inforcement, but I seriously doubt we'll see that. Too many dinosaurs in congress.

He said if congress wanted to pass laws regarding legalize cannabis he would sign it even thou he is against it. He is putting the blame where it clearly lies, on the shoulders of the congress to pass the laws.

I wish I could say that I never had any doubt that Trump would get here, but I cant quite say that.

Trump has flip flopped on this issue. As he has zero integrity I will wait and see.

He promised during his campaign to do this. I'm glad to see him not walking it back. His challenge is his AG, Sessions, who holds a completely different view. I hope he tells Sessions to back off.

Ultimate loser in this story: Sessions; drug war continuation is his largest concern, I believe.

Sessions views were quite clear, open and known when Trump hired him. If Trump truly wanted to see "state's rights" on cannabis, he wouldn't have hired sessions in the first place. This is just Trump blowing smoke because he knows congress won't do anything about it.

And a republican no less.

Whodathunkit?

Trump's opinion on anything = the opinion of the last actually smart person he heard speak on the matter.

I'd be interested to see if he has investments in the anti-drug industry.

Owns stock in a drug testing company or private prison or some such.

Its probably just that he's old and can't admit he was wrong all these decades.

If this is true it's a win for everybody. It makes no sense to have unpopular laws then solve the problem by allowing states to ignore the laws.

I mean, the real solution is for the Federal Government to make it legal and leave it to the States to set their own laws. So until that comes through, there is nothing major to be changed.

Hope they do though, a bunch of Trump's friends could probably get rich be starting up pot farms/stores.

Trump could unilaterally remove marijuana as a Schedule I drug if he wanted to. There is no federal law that makes marijuana illegal, only that the AG decides whats on what Schedule. Trump should be able to order it removed since he wields executive power.

28 CFR 0.5 - Attorney General.
The Attorney General shall:

(f) Perform or supervise the performance of other duties required by statute or Executive order.

Until Trump does, im not impressed.
