A French police officer critically injured after he volunteered to swap places with a woman being held hostage by a terrorist gunman has died.

Lt. Col. Arnaud Beltrame had been left fighting for his life after being shot by Redouane Lakdim at the end of a four-hour siege inside a supermarket in Trebes near Carcassonne in southern France.

Beltrame, 44, a distinguished officer in the local gendarmerie, offered to take the hostage's place. On entering the supermarket, he left his cellphone line open so police surrounding the store would know what was happening inside. French special forces stormed the building after hearing shots, killing Lakdim. Beltrame, who was gravely injured, was flown by helicopter to a hospital, where he died early Saturday.

This is what a real hero is. Unbelievable bravery.

Not some chest thumping politician who never worn a uniform to defend his country. So sad they couldn't have saved him.

These special types of humans only come along so rarely.

Condolence to his wife.

The word hero, truly is the only word one could possibly describe the man as.

His sacrifice, his courage and bravery are simply impossible to comprehend for the average person.

Truly an exceptional human being.

Surely for his family, his comrades and it would seem his whole country, the sadness of the incredible thing he did cannot be understated.

I am vary stingy with my use of the word hero. But this man is a hero in every sense of the word.
