One day after Democrats claimed victory in a closely watched Pennsylvania special election, a potential disaster reared up in California.

In a state that’s central to the battle for control of the House, Democrats emerged from a filing deadline late Wednesday resigned to the possibility that no Democratic candidate will appear on the November ballot in several key House races.

California’s unusual, top-two primary system — in which the top two vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation — had raised the prospect of a nightmare scenario in several districts where crowded fields of Democratic candidates might splinter their party’s share of the vote, enabling two Republicans to finish atop the field in the June primary.

In response, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and state party leaders had spent weeks running up to the deadline working to cull large fields of Democrats in targeted contests.

the cull, however, tragically, failed

the CA jungle primary

the winners---R's in CA49, CA39 and CA48

the current demesnes of dana rohrbacher, ed royce and evil darrell issa

"with eight D's competing for between 40 and 45 percent of the district’s traditional D vote, the odds of one of the eight consolidating enough of the vote to overcome baugh’s popularity and name recognition are daunting, to say the least"

of the 14 CA seats held by R's and won by hrc, 7 are on dccc's wish list

3 of those 7 are rohrbacher, royce and issa

"the prospect of D candidates cannibalizing each other in those races has weighed heavily on the party"

Asked whether Democrats had done enough to ensure their candidates a place on the November ballot, Michael Trujillo, a Democratic strategist in California said, “The answer is a big, fat ‘No.’”

pete aguilar got lost in CA's jungle in 2014, altho D's outregister R's in this part of the inland empire, he failed to make the general, leaving 2 R's to fight it out

it led to gary miller who, being R, must be a racist

the dccc conceded it may be forced to spend in its primaries, thus taking sides

predictably, "efforts to winnow candidates faced resistance from well-funded candidates and some local activists"

That's what the democrats wanted and that's what they got. They though it would give them near exclusive control over governor nominations. They did not expect so many democrats to see it as an opportunity to run, thereby fragmenting the democrat vote. It was approved by the voters so California is stuck with it.

I never saw the benefit of it to the voters.

Here's a blurb shamlessly lifted from Wikipedia:

California's blanket primary system was ruled unconstitutional in California Democratic Party v. Jones in 2000 because it forced political parties to associate with candidates they did not endorse. Then in 2004, Proposition 62, an initiative to bring the nonpartisan blanket primary to California, failed with only 46% of the vote. However, Proposition 14, a nearly identical piece of legislation, passed on the June 2010 ballot with 53.7% of the vote.[11]

Under Proposition 14, statewide and congressional candidates in California, regardless of party preference, participate in the nonpartisan blanket primary. However, a candidate must prefer the major party on the ballot that they are registered in. After the June primary election, the top two candidates advance to the November general election.

That does not affect the presidential primary, local offices, or non-partisan offices such as judges and the Superintendent of Public Instruction.[12]
