While most of the United States is debating whether or not to get serious about gun control, Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has a different solution. During a "Fox & Friends" appearance on Tuesday, Gingrich said that we shouldn't be listening to the students whose classmates were murdered. Instead, we should be giving more teachers guns.

Newt is as nutty as ever: arm the teachers! With what? Assault rifles? Semi-automatic handguns? Holsters strapped to their legs or under their arm pits? Not much you can do against a determined nut job with an AR-15, Newt.

Yep, that is just as nutty as placing 50K federal nannies in our airports to try to prevent passengers, armed with box cutters, from flying the airplanes into buildings.

So, rich people get body guards. Famous people get body guards. Presidents get body guards. Politicians, CEOs, athletes, actors. They all get armed guards, many at tax payers expense.

But not children? Students?

Teachers here have to buy tissue paper. We won't even fund schools to the point that kids can blow their noses without the teacher paying for it and now they can't even write it off on their taxes.

I'm all for more funding for the schools, but not for guns, teachers didn't sign up to be armed babysitters. If they do arm them there should be a steep pay increase as we are now saying this is a high risk dangerous job.

Teachers can have really bad days

I have seen teachers throw chalk board erasers across the room and pull a student over his desk in a rage. If that teacher had a gun that day I would not be surprised if had pulled it out and threatened the student (grade 5 so about age 11).

But back to Newt

Ok allow teachers to carry guns. Who pays, the state? When Oklahoma has some districts going to 4 day school weeks for lack of funds. Will the teachers be given professional days to learn to shoot safely, again extra costs

I think that what's really all that's needed is for there to be a BELIEF that there are armed personnel at schools, ready, willing and able to fight back, to return fire.

Like an ADT sign in your yard.

THE Nra wants to arm teachers that don't even want guns.

This is a terrible idea.

Do you have any clue how many students there are in the country? It's bad enough that teachers don't get paid well enough to be teachers now they're supposed to be volunteer members of the S.W.A.T team too huh?

There's a small handful of wealthy people, famous people, politicians... These people are more likely to be targetted because of who they are. If it's a relatively small number of potential targets it might make sense to just pay for extra security around them rather than pass legislation that affects millions. But when targets are in the millions the legislation makes far more logical sense.

Newt must figure it's safer to be in the middle of a firefight than locked in a closet. Makes perfect sense if you're an NRA stooge.

I honestly wish it were that easy. Just take away the "gun free zone" sign and replace it with "everyone is armed to the hilt". These shooters are evil but not likely that dumb.

I'm actually not opposed to the idea, but if we are going to do it we need to pay the teachers a lot more as their responsibility would be considerably more. Fund it so teachers aren't paying out of pocket. Allow teacher personal days, if your having a really bad day I don't want you armed in room full of kids that are already a handful. There are just a lot of things to take into account. In case of an accident where a child is shot by a teacher is it the feds that pay the lawsuit or the state or the town? Etc...

Only if the legislation is logical.

ADT signs don't work. The jig's up on that hack.
A burglar isn't even deterred by setting off an actual alarm, since they're in and out, generally during the day when nobody's home, and miles away before police respond after someone calls.

Back to Newt. I don't dismiss the idea out of hand. I think there needs to be guns in schools. Whether that's teachers who volunteer to be trained (some are deputized) or dedicated armed personnel added or a combination of both. Schools must be hardened.

We do it for banks, airports, court houses, court rooms, hospitals etc. Why not schools?

I think this should be up to states, counties and school districts, not regulated Federally, but supported.

Treat it the same way the navy does. Navy ships are gun free zones, but can have all personnel armed in under 5 minutes. Surely teachers, college educated folk, can perform at least as well with minimal training as a boat full of high school grad ensigns.

This is something I have been saying for years.
Just a few things that I have thought may work.

First completely voluntary, most schools will have ex military, national guard members, hunters and other gun enthusiasts who would be willing to take the extra training.of course they should be paid extra just as teachers that coach are.
Teachers would not keep firearms in their desks but there should be secure wall safes located at strategic locations that only the trained teachers have. Kind of how fire extinguishers are dispersed.

The actual details would have to be left up to individual schools and districts, I do think this could work.

I was a teacher for 33 years. That was my job and I tried to do it as well as I possibly could. If I wanted to be a police officer or security guard - I would have taken that career path.

But tell you what.... you want teachers to take on this responsibility in addition to their teaching duties? Okay. Put your money where your mouth is. Pay for the training. Pay for the guns. Pay for the ammo. And then pay them extra for performing two jobs at once. How about an extra ten grand a year for a teacher to wear a side arm at work and double as a cop or guard? Sounds like a bargain to me.

Lets see if the right wing supports that.

Are you advocating arming teen aged students?

And who will pay for the insurance? The schools, which means the tax payers.

I think you may be able to come up with something doable, but not in this current environment. There is no compromise/working together anymore in politics. Hell the only thing republicans really care about are tax cuts for the rich and they even fought among themselves over that. Since the republicans went full on obstructionist on Obama and the dems aren't going to forgive and forget, the whole thing is just a ****show at this point.

I believe you need a college degree to become a Navy officer, or in any branch. Ensign is equivalent to a 2nd Lt.

The simplistic solution if heading off school gun violence by arming teachers is apparently becoming a national movement.

What realistic solution do you propose? This is one solution but it's not the solution you want to hear. Arming staff in schools is a good solution.

Ohio sheriff offers free concealed-carry classes for teachers | cleveland.com

HAMILTON, Ohio -- A sheriff in southwest Ohio is offering free concealed carry classes for teachers in his county.

The offer from Butler County Sheriff Rick Jones comes after 17 people were killed in a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Jones tweeted the offer on Sunday and says he had more than 200 responses from interested school employees by Monday afternoon, WLWT Channel 5 reports.

"People in the schools need to be trained with firearms, period," Jones tells WLWT. "Even if you hate guns, you need to know about guns if you're in the schools."

Again I ask, what is your idea for a realistic solution?
