Colo. teacher accused of assaulting student who wouldn't stand for Pledge | TheHill

A middle school teacher from Lafayette, Colo., is accused of assaulting a student who refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Lafayette police were called to the Angevine Middle School on Thursday after reports that a teacher assaulted a child for refusing to stand, according to to the Denver Post.

Physical education teacher Karen Smith is on paid administrative leave from the Boulder Valley School District, pending the outcome of a police investigation.

A school spokesperson did not confirm or deny the allegations against Smith, who has been with the school district for over 20 years, but said students are allowed to sit or stand during the pledge.
If true she could be toast.
I understand that Civics are taught is schools.

that is (IMO) very unAmerican to assault kids for such a reason .........

I would say that it's fairly un-American to assault kids for any reason. This teacher should be stripped of her license to teach if true.

I would like to see exactly how she "assaulted".. the kid before I judge this.

"assault".. can have a pretty wide term in of what constitutes assault.

I once had a dispute on my ranch with a neighbor who threatened to beat me up... and I told him.. .."yeah, I'll tell you what, I beg you to cross that fence onto my property and I'll beat your fat (tush) to a pulp."

I was later questioned by police and not knowing what the fellow had claimed I did.. I figured it was best I said as little as possible. I basically told the police.. "I have been on my property all day" (which was true).. And when the police said.. "so you weren;t fighting with your neighbor".. I said "I try to stay out of his way, he and his wife fight and scream all the time and I don't like to get involved " (also true).

My lawyer told me that if I had admitted to the argument with my neighbor.. I could have been charged with Assault... because I verbally threatened the man with a beating.. and I had the means to follow through on that.

So.. in this case.. It could be.. that the teacher told the kid.. "get your butt up off the seat and show some respect or you'll get it"..

And that is what constituted assault.
