The Trump administration informed lawmakers Monday that new Russia sanctions called for in a bipartisan bill passed last year are not necessary yet because the measure is already "serving as a deterrent."

The announcement came as lawmakers in both parties nudged the administration to implement sanctions legislation that passed overwhelmingly in July — with only five no votes in both the House and Senate. The sanctions bill requires the imposition of penalties by Monday against entities doing "significant" business with Moscow's defense and intelligence sectors, unless Congress is notified that prospective targets are "substantially reducing" that business.

The question now is not if the Russians have compromised Trump and turned him into a Russian asset. The question is what are they blackmailing him with.

Re: White House to Congress: Russia sanctions not needed now

I think this is quite disturbing, especially given the strong bipartisan passage of the sanctions law early last year. The Executive Branch ignoring laws it doesn't like is no way to govern, but this has been something that has gone back through Obama's administration and earlier Presidencies as well. To me, this goes back to Congress largely abdicating its role in the continued passage and updating of laws to keep up with the times. For instance, we haven't changed the scheduling of marijuana on a federal level even though it's broadly popular and are instead relying on the Executive not to enforce the laws on the books. We are also stretching the current AUMF beyond recognition instead of passing a new one, just because it is a hard vote nobody in Congress wants to put their name on. This forfeiture of their Constitutional duties by Congress has made the Executive branch feel as though it can pick and choose which laws to enforce and which not to. This is a deep hole we're in, and I don't know how we reset these norms without a serious change in Congressional attitudes.

If the Mueller investigation is allowed to proceed then there is no doubt in my mind that it will find the Russians have massive financial leverage over Trump. Massive, money-laundering leverage.

This is mostly correct.

Re: White House to Congress: Russia sanctions not needed now

Trump and his National Security Adviser Flynn were planning to remove all Russian sanctions as quickly as possible after the inauguration.

Flynn getting caught lying about meeting with Russian ambassador Kislyak and discussing sanctions, and also acting as a paid foreign agent for Turkey spoiled their scheme.

Trump won't do anything to upset his Muscovite masters.

Re: White House to Congress: Russia sanctions not needed now

This basically proves collusion.

Was Obama colluding with the Cubans and the Iranians?

Was Obama colluding with the Cubans and the Iranians?

As usual apdst, waltzing into a thread and doing the intellectual equivalent of putting a flaming bag of poop on the principals porch and ringing the bell...

Remember: the ONLY thing that Trump changed in the republican platform was to weaken sanctions on the Ukraine, something near and dear to Vlad's heart.

Was Obama colluding with the Cubans and the Iranians?

Dunno. Have you ever considered colluding with relevancy and intellectual honesty?

Are you agreeing with Pete's post? This proves collusion?

Obama paid a ransom to Iran. Was that really a payoff to his Iranian handlers?

So, no. You've never consider colluding with relevancy or intellectual honesty.

Did the Cubans or Iran meddle in our elections? That is what this is about. How soon you forget. You also forgot that the bill was passed unanimously by Congress and Trump is thumbing his nose at it.

Is collusion a crime? You think it is. Don't you?

EH? Did the Cubans and Iranians actively try to influence the election to his favour? Did they actively have business deals with Obama? Did Obama have friends with deep links to said 2 nations dictatorships? And why are you trying to derail and muddle the waters yet again?

Had this been Obama or Clinton not signing into law a bill pass with a massive supermajority.. you would be calling for impeachment and revolution.

The Iranians killed Americans.
